The first few weeks of school help determine more than who’s in class. They help determine staffing, class sizes, resources and funding.

As GCS approaches its 10-day enrollment checkpoint, actual student counts are compared with projections. If the numbers look different than expected, staff and resources may need to shift too.

It’s a good reminder that when we talk about per-pupil funding, the “pupil” part really matters.

Here’s why the count matters and what happens next.

Ever wonder how the school calendar is made?

North Carolina law sets the start and end date limits and requires at least 1,025 instructional hours. In GCS, a committee helps develop the calendar before it goes to the Board of Education for public input and final approval.

The 2026–27 and 2027–28 calendars are now published and available at gcsnc.org/all-events.

Teachers do more than teach. Many also spend hundreds of their own dollars each year buying supplies for their classrooms.

That’s why the Teacher Supply Warehouse, an initiative of shift_ed, is such an important community resource. It gives Guilford County educators access to free classroom supplies while creating an easy way for businesses and community members to give back.

The warehouse recently celebrated the grand opening of its new location at 134 Franklin Blvd, Greensboro. If you’d like to donate supplies or learn more, email Lenny at [email protected].
