A small routine that teaches a great deal: the Montessori work rug.

Children select a rug, unroll it to mark a defined workspace, complete their chosen activity, and roll it back up when finished — returning both rug and materials to their place on the shelf.

This simple practice reinforces several Montessori principles at once: respect for the prepared environment, ownership over one’s own work cycle, and the development of order and sequence. It also teaches children to respect the boundaries of others’ workspaces, laying an early foundation for community awareness.

Small, repeated practices like this are where independence is built — one rug at a time.
