⛏️ Gold Tip: Sample First. Dig Second.

One of the easiest ways to waste a day prospecting is to find a spot that looks perfect and immediately start digging.

Instead, sample it.

Take a pan from behind the boulder. Try the gravel beside it. Check the inside bend. Test where the gravel meets clay or bedrock.

You're not trying to get rich from those first few pans. You're asking the creek a question:

“Is there gold here?”

One flake tells you something.

Several flakes from the same area tell you a lot more.

And zero gold? That's useful information too. Move a little and test again.

Good prospecting isn't about digging harder. It's about figuring out where it's worth digging hard.

🪨 Gold Lesson: North Carolina Creeks Are Full of More Than Gold

This rock came home with me from the creek, and those little black markings are exactly why it caught my eye.

They look like tiny plants or fossils growing across the surface, but they're likely mineral dendrites—branching mineral deposits, commonly manganese oxides, that form along tiny fractures and surfaces in the rock.

North Carolina has some incredible geology. The Piedmont and Uwharrie regions have been through hundreds of millions of years of volcanic activity, mountain building, metamorphism, faulting, erosion, and weathering.

Eventually, pieces of that geology break loose and end up in our creeks. Flowing water rounds them, moves them downstream, and sometimes leaves us with rocks like this.

That's one reason I spend almost as much time looking at the rocks as I do looking for gold.
A creek isn't just moving water.

It's a moving collection of the geology upstream.
Learn to recognize the rocks in your pan and under your feet, and you start learning where you are—and what might be hiding nearby. ⛏️

🏹 We went looking for gold... and may have found something completely different.

While prospecting in the Uwharrie yesterday, this came out of the creek.

At first glance we thought arrowhead, but after cleaning it up and getting a better look, we're not quite ready to call it.

It's thin, pointed, and there appear to be areas along the edges that may have been worked—but whether it's an Indigenous stone tool, an unfinished piece, or just a really convincing natural rock is the question.

And that's part of what makes walking these old Carolina creeks so much fun.

You go out looking for gold and never really know what piece of history—or geology—is going to show up next.

I had the chance to take a husband and wife out prospecting with Eureka Gold Panning today, and days like this are exactly why these trips are so much fun.

⛏️ Greensboro has a gold history most people don't know about.

Long before California became famous for gold, North Carolina was the center of America's first gold rush.**

Gold Lesson #3: Black Sand Is Your Friend

If you're panning and suddenly start seeing a bunch of black sand, don't dump it out.

You're getting to the good stuff.

Black sand is made up of heavy minerals like magnetite, and because it's heavier than most of the sand and gravel in the creek, it tends to concentrate in some of the same places as gold.

Does black sand automatically mean there's gold there? Nope.

But when I'm prospecting and start seeing a good concentration of heavy black sand, I'm paying attention.

That's also why the last little bit of a gold pan can be the hardest part for beginners. You've washed away most of the light material and you're left fighting the heavies—the exact place where that tiny piece of gold might be hiding.

So next time you see black sand in your pan, slow down.

There might be something yellow hiding underneath it. 👀⛏️

There are a lot of ways to spend a day with your team... but I bet not many involve finding real NC gold!

We had a great group out on the creek today learning how to read the water, work a gold pan, feed the sluice, and experience what real prospecting is all about.

One of the coolest parts of these trips is watching everyone go from, "I have no idea what I'm doing," to spotting black sand, reading the creek, and getting excited over that first piece of gold.

It's a different kind of team-building. No conference room. No PowerPoint. No rushing from one place to the next.

Just good people, a beautiful North Carolina creek, and the chance to learn something completely new.

⛏️ Days like this keep me coming back.

After spending time learning a new creek, reading the water, and testing different spots, I was rewarded with this beautiful 0.60 gram picker.

Could I have walked right past it? Absolutely.

That's what makes prospecting so addictive. Gold doesn't care how long you've been looking. It rewards patience, persistence, and paying attention to the little details.

This picker isn't just a piece of gold—it's proof that taking the time to understand a creek pays off.
