Middle and Upper School students spent the first part of last week working on Public Purpose projects.

6th grade cleaned up a stream, 7th grade worked in the garden, and 8th grade started building free lending libraries.

The work continued in Upper School, with 9th graders engaging in Leadership GDS, where students rotated through hearing about 5 different organizations- Out of the Garden, Kellin Foundation, Peacehaven Farm, Backpack Beginnings and Community Housing Solutions. They also heard from the American Red Cross before putting these leadership skills to the test packing lunches at Backpack Beginnings and working with the NC Wildlife Habitat Foundation on a cleanup.

It’s hard to tell who loves our Bengal Buddies program more, our kindergarteners or our seniors! Bengal Buddies lets seniors and their kindergarten buddies get to know each other over the course of the school year through playing on the playground, reading stories, and sitting side-by-side at all-school assemblies. Kindergarteners eager look forward to seeing their senior buddy and, and seniors get the incredible opportunity to serve as a mentor.

After a swearing in ceremony with our director of security, Steve Tollie, last week, our 4th grade safety patrol has jumped right in to help our youngest students get to class safely in the mornings! Safety patrol is an opportunity for fourth grade students to demonstrate leadership and responsibility, build community, and serve others during morning carpool. We appreciate their hard work throughout the school year!

Earlier this week, Greensboro Day School officially dedicated Callicott Court in the Sally Gorrell Kuratnick ’75 Alumni Gym! 🏐

This special dedication recognizes Lynn Callicott Baranski ’84 and her mother, Anne, for their generous gift to the Be BOLD Campaign and celebrates Lynn’s incredible volleyball legacy at GDS. Lynn helped lead the Bengals to our first volleyball state championship in 1983 before playing at Wake Forest University and building a successful career, currently serving as Managing Director at BlackRock Private Equity Partners.

Before the varsity volleyball match against Calvary Day School, Lynn met with the team to share advice on college prep, life lessons learned through sports, and her love for GDS: "Of all of my educational experiences, Greensboro Day School was the most meaningful in shaping who I am today."
