Is your Career Going the Way of the Pontiac or the VCR? YES - Careers do disappear.

A whopping 300,000 administrative jobs alone disappeared between 2004-2009 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Make sure you're not in a disappearing career by:

1. Evaluating the situation for yourself, doing your own research and using your own good judgment.

2. Scanning the environment and building new job skills that are in demand.

3. Acting for the present, but staying focused on the future. Remember, your goal isn't loyalty to any one company, but lifelong opportunity for employment.

Networking Tips for Homecoming on your HBCU Campus

Yes - we know homecoming is about the game, but why not really use the time to cultivate some professional relationships too? Here are 11 networking tips to make the most of homecoming events this year.

1. Cardinal rule of networking is - Givers Gain. It's not just about what people can do for you. it's how you can help.

2. It's not who you help that will necessarily help you.

3. Keep your giving circle large. Don't restrict yourself to your brothers or sorors.

4. Follow up with people in a timely manner.

5. To maintain your connections will take time. Don't engage if you won't follow up.

6. Have your 30-second elevator speech ready to go. Yes, you are all in the same group, but you will still need to communicate who YOU are and what you are about.

7. Network up AND down. Don't assume all your great contacts will be senior professionals to you.

8. Set a personal goal for the number of people you want to meet during Homecoming weekend.

9. If you are job hunting, it shouldn't be the first thing you say. However, don't be shy about requesting follow up conversations.

10. Ask people how they would like for you to follow up. Makes no sense to call them if Twitter is where they want to meet.

11. Brush up on your social networking skills. Groups come together really quickly when people are wired and connected. Don't get left out.
