The chairs filled early Wednesday morning, parents clutching bouquets and phones and tissues, while one by one, 42 students from the Early College at Guilford crossed the stage into a future that already seems to have been hurrying toward them for years.

The partnership between Guilford County Schools and Guilford College has routinely delivered on its promise. For the fourth straight year -- every single year this graduating class attended -- ECG has stood as the top-ranked high school in North Carolina.

Today is Memorial Day. Some Quakers wear both a red poppy and a white poppy this time of year. One symbolizes remembrance. The other symbolizes the hope that remembrance might lead humanity somewhere better. Together they ask something powerful of us: not simply to remember war, but to learn from it.

At Guilford, we believe remembrance should widen the heart, not harden it. It should move us toward compassion, toward conversation across difference, toward the stubborn belief that human life is sacred everywhere.
