The Bonner Center for Community Learning provides resources, opportunities, connections and direction that encourage the integration of academics and experience, campus and community, self and service, passion and purpose. Following Berea College, Guilford and several other schools are among the "founding" members of the network committed to the idea that community service and learning are critica
l parts of a student's education and training. Prior to the creation of the Bonner Scholars Program, James Keith played a prescient role advocating for Guilford students to get off campus and engage in the community. Judy Harvey became the first director of the Bonner program in 1992. James Shields is its second director. Today the Bonner Center offers programming throughout the year including workshops and training sessions in community engagement and alternate history tours of the city and community sites. The Bonner Scholars Program, Bonner Fellows Program and Community Scholars Program offer special assistance and support to Guilford students. Students working through the Center include site and project coordinators, site and project team members, research assistants, club officers and members, interns, and volunteers who maintain more than 20 community sites and research projects.
