The Music Academy of North Carolina

The Music Academy of North Carolina We welcome all ages, abilities and backgrounds to join our dynamic community of music lovers!

The Music Academy was founded in 1982 by Dr. Ivan Battle in response to the need for a community music school that offered exceptional music education in a structured, well-paced course of study. Starting out with just three teachers and 20 students, today MANC has over 35 instructors and almost 1,000 students from the Piedmont and surrounding areas. In order to both reflect and serve the communit

y and the state, The Music Academy offers a comprehensive, culturally diverse curriculum including classical study, jazz education, folk/bluegrass lessons, gospel piano, rock music, Latino music, and early childhood music. The positive response to this more diverse offering has resulted in increased diversity among teachers, students, and volunteers who more truly represent the rich mix of cultures of the Piedmont.

The Beginning Piano Program is for kids ages 5-7. Over the fall and spring semesters, the students receive a 45-minute group class and a 15-minute private lesson each week.

The group class concentrates on topics such as note reading, counting, rhythm, ear training, sight reading, and musical expression through games, movement, and ensemble playing. The small group setting encourages teamwork, listening, and creativity, helping each child build confidence and musical skills from the very first lesson. During the weekly private lesson, students will receive more individualized coaching to further develop these concepts.

This instruction plan focuses on a natural approach to the keyboard to develop fluency in reading and musicianship. Register at musicacademync.org

Do you know how many times we've heard, "I wish I had continued piano lessons" or "I wish I had learned to play the piano"? Now's the time for wishes to come true.

Adults — RECREATIONAL piano is just that — for fun. It's a time to learn, yes. But also, a time to make friends, relax, laugh, enjoy familiar tunes, and tap into that creativity you've been yearning for.

Classes are on Saturdays at 1:00p starting October 3. Sign up at musicacademync.org

This session, we're digging into three classics that every jazz musician should have in their back pocket: Cole Porter's "Night and Day," Sonny Rollins' "Oleo," and Milt Jackson's "Bag's Groove." We'll talk a little about each tune before we dive in.

And here's the sweetener: attend all four fall jazz workshops (9/13, 10/11, 11/8,12/13), and you'll be entered to win a 45-minute private jazz lesson. Consistency has never sounded so good!
