We welcome all ages, abilities and backgrounds to join our dynamic community of music lovers!

The Music Academy was founded in 1982 by Dr. Ivan Battle in response to the need for a community music school that offered exceptional music education in a structured, well-paced course of study. Starting out with just three teachers and 20 students, today MANC has over 35 instructors and almost 1,000 students from the Piedmont and surrounding areas. In order to both reflect and serve the communit

Throwback to Fiddle Fun at Fairview Elementary in 2019.

Bringing music to children is so rewarding. The sounds mesmerize them and being able to create those sounds makes their faces light up with awe and pride.

Keep your eyes peeled! If you are considering lessons at MANC, you won't want to miss this offer!

Another successful round of student recitals. So impressed by their poise while performing!

Saturday, November 18. 5:30 pm. Organ Hall at UNCG. Don't miss trombonist, Jim Lane, performing!

We are lucky to have Jim at MANC as a department chair and teacher. Go see this fantastic talent!

Renee Hilgendorf, piano student of Tamar Saliashvili, performs at the North Carolina Music Teachers Association conference in Wilmington last month.

Renee received Honorable Mention for her composition, "The Foreign Traveler", in the NCMTA 2023 Young Composers Contest. Way to go, Renee! 😍

How many drums can you fit in your trunk?

Gilson finds out as he takes the drums into the community for group percussion at Journey Adult Day Center!

Not only does Chris get our students connected to their instructors, he's also an instructor himself. He teaches sound recording at Guilford College and MANC. In addition, he's our live sound engineer for events, like recitals and our yearly Gala.

Chris started in radio and deejayed from 1980-1998 then went to school to become a recording engineer. But he loved his disc jockey roots, and in 2011 became a community DJ through Guilford College. Remember Lee Michaels on Oldies 93? That's our Chris!

Currently you can hear him weekly on Wednesdays from 8:00a-10:00a on WQFS 90.9FM. His show is aptly named "Pop Music Junkies Club". Give him a listen or stream his show on!

Did I mention he also plays guitar and sings? He performs with The Holtzhackern Tyrolean Band and The Nonprofits!

Throwback to our very first location in the summer of 1982 on Pisgah Church Road. We have grown so much over the years. And now we own our building and are here to stay. Thanks to our community for your continuous love and support!

No, not that kind of gas. This could be embarrassing, too, but for different reasons.

I'm talking about Guitar Acquisition Syndrome or more generally, Gear Acquisition Syndrome. It's an obsession with buying guitars, gear, or the latest and greatest technology available to satisfy your musical cravings.

One of our awesome donors schooled me on this term when he generously donated a guitar, hoping that would free up some room to purchase another.

Buying more instruments and more equipment causes a dopamine release in your brain, making you happy. There are a ton of studies, blogs, support groups, and more if you need some advice on how to quell your GAS.

One common trick is before getting more, master the use of your current gear. And if you need help with that, we got you covered.

May your day be filled with haunting good music!

Dr. Thomas Swenson, what a tremendous asset to The Music Academy!

"I am very excited to return to the role of Chair of the Piano Department at MANC. With my fantastic colleagues, we hope to build our community of piano students through classes, friendly competitions, achievement opportunities, and simply sharing our music with each other.

"I have been at MANC nearly three decades and have witnessed the powerful impact of piano lessons on children and adults. I look forward to continuing to watch as lives are transformed through piano study."

Although we've held Halloween recitals for many years, we moved them outside as a necessity during the pandemic in 2020. Since then our open-air performances have become a much anticipated event. The weather looks great for our recitals this Saturday! 👻🦇🎃

Hey MANC students, this is a great opportunity to showcase your talent! Cash prizes and solo opportunities with the Winston-Salem Symphony are awarded to the winners.

So proud of our students for continually growing and improving their skills. And getting better and better every performance!

Come play. Come listen. Just come enjoy some jazz!

Another bright light leading our guitar department. Ken's vision is to provide more opportunities for students to perform different instruments and be a part of community bands. He would also like to highlight the talents of all faculty members as both teachers and performers.

Ken is obviously a talented guitarist, but he also likes to play instruments from other musical cultures, like the Sitar and Baglama Saz, as well as other Western guitar derivatives, like Hawaiian lap steel and Pedal Steel guitar.

Along with playing music, he enjoys art, composition, and writing both fiction and nonfiction. Multi-talented for sure!

Check out the pics of Ken demonstrating his expertise in our community!

From Jazz Jams past...

To Jazz Jams future... we'd love to see you this Saturday at 1:00 in our performance hall. Learn some new techniques, join in for some improv or come cheer on the musicians!

Two weeks from today, we will gather in our parking lot to celebrate our students' talent and the spirit of the holiday. Let your teacher know if you want to perform in this special recital.

Join us for a day full of crazy creatures and inspiring music!

What a star leading our voice department!

"Everyday I'm inspired by the entire community at the Music Academy! I'm thankful for the privilege of fostering growth for our students and now for supporting my fellow teachers."

Our jazz studies department is top notch! They put on a show wherever they go, and the Jazz Jam is no exception.

Learn jam session etiquette, improvisation skills and other tools to give you confidence to play. Then express yourself by joining the jam session or just listen to the unique styles and sounds.

Free to anyone who has a desire to learn more about jazz!

Congrats to piano student, Renee Hilgendorf!

Renee was named Honorable Mention for her composition, The Foreign Traveler, which she submitted to the North Carolina Music Teachers Association 2023 Young Composers Contest. She is invited to play her composition at the NCMTA conference in Wilmington this month.

Amazing news! Thanks to the Murphy Family and all of our generous donors, we now own our building!

Without a rent expense, we will be able to focus on more student scholarships and expand outreach in our community. Plus we will be able to make improvements that benefit our MANC family.

Here's to a bright future in our permanent home!

We are thrilled to have Colleen heading our string department. She has been with MANC since 2001!

Her favorite quote by Shinichi Suzuki - “Teaching music is not my main purpose. I want to make good citizens. If children hear fine music from the day of their birth and learn to play it, they develop sensitivity, discipline and endurance. They get a beautiful heart."

Check out pics of Colleen encouraging beautiful hearts in our community. ❤
