Real-world learning isn’t just for students—it’s for educators, too! When our teachers have the opportunity to step into local workplaces, they gain firsthand insight that can make classroom learning even more relevant and meaningful. Those experiences help educators better understand the skills, expectations, and career pathways our students are preparing to pursue. We’re grateful to the local businesses that open their doors to our educators and help strengthen the connection between our schools and our community. What our teachers learn today can have a lasting impact on our students tomorrow!

At Greene County Elementary School, leadership starts long before students leave the elementary school doors. Over the past week, our 5th graders stepped into new leadership roles after participating in an application and interview process, receiving their school job assignments, learning their responsibilities, and training for their first official day on the job!

From serving as door holders and greeters to collecting library books, helping with announcements, watering plants, supporting transportation, completing flag duty, cleaning the indoor playground, and serving as student ambassadors, these Tigers are learning that an important part of leadership is about being someone others can count on.

This is 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀 in action: students taking ownership of responsibilities, following through on commitments, and learning to manage themselves as they serve others. They're also growing as 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 by contributing to their school community and as 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 by interacting with students and staff in ways that help their school run smoothly.

We're excited to see our 5th graders take ownership, lead by example, and show our younger Tigers what it looks like to make a difference right where you are. 🐅 Let's get to work!

What does it look like when a community partners with higher education to find solutions to the issues that matter most locally? That’s the idea behind the University of Georgia Archway Partnership, a program that connects Georgia communities with higher education resources to address locally identified community and economic development needs.

Greene County is now part of the Archway Partnership, bringing together community leaders, local organizations, education partners and the University of Georgia to identify opportunities and develop solutions that can strengthen our community and quality of life. As a participating partner, the Greene County School System is proud to help share this opportunity for our community to be part of the conversation.

🗣️ Community-wide listening sessions will be held throughout Greene County throughout the next two weeks. Residents are invited to learn more about the Archway Partnership and share their ideas, perspectives and priorities for the future of our community.

𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻! 🎨🐯 AWCMS students are putting their creativity to work in Mrs. Martin’s Kandinsky-inspired art lesson! As they explore the elements and principles of art, students are making their own creative choices, trying new ideas, and finding different ways to express themselves. And along the way, they are practicing skills that will serve them well far beyond the art room as they create, communicate, and collaborate. The Portrait of a Graduate is woven into everyday learning, not as an “extra,” but through the work students are already doing. These everyday moments are where the Portrait of a Graduate comes to life!

This week at Greene County High School, learning was anything but hands-off! Our students were 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 across classrooms and pathways:

🔧 In Mr. Maloy’s Automotive pathway at the Greene College & Career Academy, students got hands-on experience changing the oil in a vehicle.

🍪 In Mrs. Alston’s Intro to Baking & Pastry class, students in the Culinary pathway were rolling, cutting, and creating cookies from scratch.

🗺️ In Spanish, students brought their learning to life by creating maps highlighting Spanish-speaking regions around the world.

🎭 And in Theater class, students used pantomime to explore storytelling, expression, and communication without saying a word.

Hands-on learning gives students opportunities to apply what they’re learning, solve problems, build confidence, collaborate with others, and connect classroom concepts to the real world. It’s one of the ways GCHS makes learning 𝗷𝗼𝘆𝗳𝘂𝗹, 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗳𝘂𝗹, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗼𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘀.

From the garage to the kitchen, from maps to the stage—our Tigers are learning by doing!

What does a Compassionate Connector look like in kindergarten? Sometimes, it looks like building something together, one domino or Magna-Tile at a time!

Today in Mrs. Andrews’s class, our kindergarteners were working together to create, build, problem-solve, and share ideas. Their teacher shared that activities like these are intentionally designed to help students build community: learning how to work with others, listen to different ideas, show kindness and respect, and understand how their actions affect the people around them.

That’s the Portrait of a Graduate in action! 🌟 At the kindergarten level, Compassionate Connectors build community with empathy and integrity by learning to:
🤝 Work cooperatively with their classmates
💬 Listen to and value others’ ideas
💛 Show kindness, respect, and care
🧩 Take responsibility for their role in a group

These may seem like simple building activities, but they are helping our youngest learners develop skills that will grow with them throughout their educational journey, and beyond.
