The African American Studies Program at Guilford College is saddened to learn of the death of Professor Edwins Gwako. He was a significant contributor to the program, an outstanding scholar and colleague. He will be dearly missed.

Every year since 1976, the month of February is designated to acknowledging the history, achievements, and celebrating the central role of African Americans in United States history. The African American Studies Program and Karen Tinsley’s Psychology of African Americans class would like to invite Guilford College students, faculty and staff to participate in the appreciation of African Americans culture. This is an opportunity, welcoming all, to recognize, explore, and share African American history, as well as discussions on recent event. Please join us in enjoying local musical performers, artists, singers, and poetry reading, dramatic performances, and biographical sketches by Guilford college students.

Reflections of Our Past, Hope for Our Future

African American Studies is sponsoring an evening of dramatic presentations, poetry readings, musical performances and more in recognition of Black History Month.

Professor Karen Tinsley’s Psychology of African Americans class will host the event – Reflections of Our Past, Hope for Our Future. The program is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Participants will include Joy-movement dancers, singer Raven Ho**er and artist Erran Hamlin.

Careers in Community Organizing for Social Justice

The Direct Action & Research Training (DART) Center will be hosting an online information session on Wednesday, February 3 at 8pm eastern/7pm central to discuss careers in community organizing with individuals interested in uniting congregations and working for social, economic and racial justice.

DART hires and trains organizers to build organizations that have successfully addressed issues including:

* Plugging the school-to-prison pipeline
* Reining in predatory lending practices
* Expanding access to primary health and dental care
* Prioritizing funding for affordable housing and job training
* Education reform in low-performing public schools

Positions start August 15, 2016 in Charleston, SC, Columbus, OH, Lexington, KY, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale and St. Petersburg, FL.

Starting salary $34,000/year + benefits.

Although it may be helpful, no prior organizing experience is necessary. Fluent speakers of Spanish and Haitian Creole are encouraged to apply.
