In light of the global COVID-19 pandemic, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Research Apprenticeship Program (RAP).
We regret having to cancel what is always an inspiring opportunity for students to gain first-hand research experience, but the health and safety of participants and our faculty and staff must be our main concern. This decision is consistent with guidance from the UNC System and North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, which is offering only online/alternative course delivery through the summer.
Everyone who sent the $25 application fee will receive a full refund. It is not necessary to contact us about your refund, which will be processed automatically. Please allow at least 60 days to receive your refund, as it is being processed on the university level.
We encourage eligible students to reapply to next year’s RAP.

It was wonderful having Nadia Abi and Julie Bekono working with us this summer, or as I lovingly call them our “BIOE babies”. They truly became a part of our BIOE family and made themselves at home. Our researchers and graduate students worked with them extensively, especially Dr. Bo Zhang. It was also wonderful meeting the other students and hearing their presentations.
Although, I am biased toward our own students, because for the time they were here they were ours, I was, however, really impressed with one that worked Dr. Guochen Yang. Her name is Nina Myers. Not only did she present her poster with enthusiasm, clarity, and comprehension, she also told me the story of how she applied for the program, which was absolutely wonderful! It showed a great appreciation for such an opportunity, as well as her determination to be a participant in this program. She made a deep impression on me as well as her mentor, who stated that he would be willing to provide her with a scholarship.
Thank you.
