Research is about more than what happens in the lab. Itโ€™s about building skills, connections and confidence.

This summer, 19 undergraduate and community college students from across the country joined JSNN for immersive, faculty-mentored research experiences in nanotechnology, semiconductors, quantum technologies, advanced materials, biomedical sciences and more.

Through the NSF SENIC SUIN REU and Semi-BELLS Summer Internship Program, students gained hands-on research experience, strengthened their scientific communication skills, explored graduate school and career pathways, and built connections with researchers and peers.

The summer culminated in poster presentations where interns had the opportunity to share what they discovered โ€” and how much they grew along the way.

Major NSF Investment Highlights JSNN Leadership in Building the Bioeconomy of the Future!

The Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering (JSNN) is proud to play a key role in the newly funded NSF BRIDGES Engine, a transformative initiative that will receive up to $160 million over the next decade to help build sustainable bioeconomies and strengthen workforce development across the Southeast.

JSNN faculty members Dr. Michael Curry and Dr. Jerald Dumas will help lead the workforce development efforts for this groundbreaking project while contributing expertise in sustainable biomanufacturing and biorenewable materials. Their work will help prepare the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators for careers in the growing bioeconomy.

As Dean Dr. Masud Chowdhury noted, this award will help bridge the gap between biological innovation and workforce readiness, creating opportunities for high-paying jobs and strengthening domestic manufacturing. The impact of this initiative will extend beyond the project region, bringing valuable knowledge and opportunities throughout North Carolina.

Congratulations to our faculty, partners, and collaborators on this remarkable achievement!
