As Virgin Islanders, we are more than residents, but designated culture bearers. Our stories, traditions, language, and history live through us. As a native whose lineage traces back more than 10 generations of Crucians, I believe it is our responsibility to keep the cultural fire burning for the next generation.
In commemoration of , Educators’ Black Book is proud to announce the pre-launch of the official Virgin Islands cultural workbook, ‘KALLALOO: Curating Cultural CHAMPS’.
This project was thoughtfully curated in collaboration with St. Croix’s 2024 Teacher of the Year, Ms. Tatyana Hewitt, with one goal in mind: empowering young Virgin Islanders to know, question, and celebrate their heritage.
Designed for students ages 8–14, the workbook features a diverse collection of rigorous and engaging activities, including:
• Comprehensive critical-thinking questions
• Student-led discussion prompts
• Cultural literacy & STEM exercises
• Standards aligned with Virgin Islands Department of Education’s Kallaloo Framework.
Because culture must be taught, practiced, and protected.
This workbook is not just a learning tool; it is an invitation for the next generation to carry the torch. The movement starts with education. The legacy continues with them.
