Part of our final discussion returned to the issue of Asian Americans and attitudes towards Black Lives Matter. In this slide, I showed the huge support from Black, Latinx and Southeast Asian communities protesting the police shooting death of Chieu Di Thi Vo, a Vietnamese refugee. Montagnard Bonners Lek Siu and Hlois Mlo both addressed the City Council demanding release of the police body cam footage. The slide also shows more recent support by Montagnard and other SE Asian youth for BLM protest marches following the police killing of George Floyd and the still unresolved Greensboro police killing of Marcus Smith.

When given the chance and proper support, newcomer Asian Americans like Montagnards (and others) from low-income families can do extremely well. This data describes the 14 Montagnards who attended Guilford College. Their graduation rate is far better than average Guilford students. The majority of Montagnards were involved in both Service Learning and Research, High Impact Practices that are known to improve learning perceptions and positively affect retention rates.

As we looked at Asian American communities today, we saw clear divisions between large established groups like Indian Americans and Chinese Americans compared to Southeast Asians like Montagnards, Karen, Cambodians and others. A clear demonstration could be detected in Greensboro's Early/Middle College programs, where high income seemed a more likely determinant of educational achievement rather than race.

Students learned about CBPR projects like the Montagnard Hypertension Project and the community-led Population project, neither of which would have been possible without Bonner Scholars and Guilfordians.

I presented this kind of high level work typical of graduate students to the class in order for them to know just what an extraordinary place Guilford College is. Service Learning, the foundation of so much hands on learning for Bonner Center students, was also the way Montagnard students (and others) learned essential research skills.

Today speakers, Phun and Abi, will be discussing with us on the topic of counting their community population through research and what that means for the Montagnard community in terms of sense of community, identity, health disparity, and being a minority within a minority.
