Farm Week 2022 - Everyone had a great view of the hatching chicks in our classroom incubator. We milked a “cow”, raised a barn, sorted farm (stuffed) animals, and brought dandelion treats daily to our hens. The seeds we planted last week in our Children’s Garden are already sprouting! We will continue to raise our chicks in our classroom brooder until warmer temps allow us to move them to an outdoor coop. Until then, we get to read to them each day… a favorite activity!

Minnesotans fish free with kids Jan. 15-17
Take proper precautions on the ice

Take a Kid Ice Fishing Weekend is this Saturday, Jan. 15, through Monday, Jan. 17.

During the weekend, Minnesota residents can go ice fishing for free if they are fishing with a child 15 years old or younger. Minnesotans 15 years old or younger don’t need fishing licenses any time of the year.

“Ice fishing is lots of fun for kids and adults alike. There’s nothing quite like making your way onto a frozen lake, drilling a hole through the ice and catching fish,” said Benji Kohn, volunteer mentor program coordinator with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. “If you’re interested in giving ice fishing a try, learning the basics is really doable. We have helpful information on our website to get you started.”

Check the DNR’s learn to ice fish page (dnr.state.mn.us/gofishing/learn-ice-fish.html) for more information about ice fishing.

Additionally, anyone interested in learning about ice fishing for panfish is invited to a free DNR webinar on Wednesday, Jan. 12, at noon. Scott Mackenthun, a DNR area fisheries supervisor, will discuss tips and techniques anglers can use to have fun catching sunfish, crappie and perch. Registration is required. More information, including how to register, is available on the DNR outdoor skills and stewardship page (dnr.state.mn.us/fishwildlife/outreach).

Ice conditions vary and there is no such thing as 100 percent safe ice. Always check local ice conditions before heading out to a lake or river. Visit the DNR ice safety page (mndnr.gov/icesafety) for ice safety guidelines.

“Let’s try to figure out!!” This is learning through play. Perfect examples of hands on learning. On Friday we brought a variety of ramps outdoors - an area with vehicles and wood ramps, and area with balls and gutters, another with marble runs. Some kids discovered stacking ramps together, some repeated their experiments to see if they would get the same results as their other tries. One friend took every vehicle down every wood ramp - then started combining the vehicles looking for different results. In some classrooms teachers talk and explain and use worksheets. But some teachers create learning opportunities for kids to make discoveries on their own - and are close at hand to extend vocabulary and give words to the child’s new found concepts. In our indoor classroom today we spotted back legs on one of our tadpoles, and 2 of our Monarch eggs hatched into super teeny munching caterpillars. Happy FriYAY!

Exploring the 4th of July in the USA this week by creating tshirts and headbands, marching to Sousa, having our own parade, and instead of fireworks - we exploded Diet Coke with Menthos (always super fun!) Happy July 4th! 🇺🇸

May we raise children
who love the unloved
things - the dandelion, the
worms & spiderlings.
Children who sense
the rose needs the thorn
& run into rainswept days
the same way they
turn towards sun...
And when they're grown &
someone has to speak for those
who have no voice
may they draw upon that
wilder bond, those days of
tending tender things
and be the ones.

It’s been a happy week with new friends joining our Covid Pod Preschool - and we are sharing our annual Christmas season traditions with them. Thursday we made gingerbread houses, and Friday we made and hung stockings by the fireplace to see if St Nick visits this weekend 🧦 🎄 🏠

I speak with so many parents who struggle with toddler & preschool kids pushing limits. It can be super frustrating as a parent - I get that. How to react when kids push our buttons?

In my classroom I incorporate RIE philosophy and highly recommend this great read from Janet Lansbury. Check out her multitude of well written articles on raising children.

Limit-pushing behavior can confound even the most attuned parent or caregiver. Why would our sweet darling throw her toy at us when we’ve just asked her not to, and then add insult to injury by smirking? Is she evil? Does she have a pressing need to practice throwing skills? Maybe she just hates u...
