Sometimes, doing the right thing isn’t easy, but Colton didn’t let that stop him. He embraced a challenge, trusted his judgment, and chose to do what he knew was right.

Ms. Lagorio's class visited Karnes Orchard on Wednesday. They learned about apple trees and how to take care of them as well as learning the correct way to pick an apple. Students then got to pick their own apple. Each student also interviewed an employee at Karnes Orchard to learn about their job and to see if they might be interested in that job field. A picnic lunch was enjoyed as well. Next week, students will be cooking a variety of foods with apples as the main ingredients, using apples from our local orchard.

Students in Ms. Reed’s and Mrs. Stockdale’s ELA classes participated in a Writers Workshop as they worked on their multi-paragraph argumentative essays. Their topic was, “Are teens too old to trick-or-treat?” 🎃 Students learned how to state a clear claim and choose a side, use evidence from the passages to support their claim, and explain how their evidence supports their reasons. They also worked on organizing their writing into clear paragraphs, including an introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. It was the perfect day for writing in ELA! ✏️📚🎃

On Thursday, Ms. Lagorio's class spent the day at the Highlands Nature Sanctuary, the oldest and largest preserve in the Arc of Appalachia, a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the beauty and biodiversity of Ohio's wildlands. Students began the day by creating their own tree and leaf identification booklet, which included making leaf rubbings of the leaves found around the Appalachian Forest Museum. This was led by one of the naturalist guides at the preserve. Students then hiked the Valley of the Ancients trail that brought them to a cave they were able to explore. Later in the day they explored a smaller, much more narrow cave, and also got to meet the resident box turtle. It was a fantastic day!

🧱✨ Turning Literature Into LEGO! ✨🧱

8th grade ELA students recently took their learning from the page to the real world with a little creativity and a LOT of LEGO!

After studying “Sympathy” by Paul Laurence Dunbar and “Rise Up” by Andra Day, students explored the connections between the two pieces—including their shared themes, tone, mood, and symbolism.

Then came the fun part: building those connections! 🧱

Students designed LEGO creations that physically represented a connection between the two works. The goal wasn’t simply to build something that looked cool—it was to make their thinking visible and explain how their creation connected back to the texts.

It was so fun to see how many different ways our students interpreted the same ideas. Their creativity, collaboration, and ability to turn abstract literary concepts into something tangible were on full display!
