For all who know and for those who don’t know this feeling. It’s extremely holy. It is a gift. But it cuts like a knife every time.

They love me and they leave me every time.

Flash mob weeding party Sunday, July 26th at 9 am. This is probably 30 hours of weeding by myself so the more hands the better. Kids are welcome. I don’t like to ask for help but starting the summer with Lyme made it hard to keep up. My old body can’t work out in the hot sun like I used to. We have the tractor to haul loads. Come learn your weeds! It is mostly small prostrate amaranth, Galinsoga (which I have fought valiantly for 20 years), purslane which is an extremely good edible, a little foxtail and lots of sorrel. Bring a weeding tool if you have one. I have many buckets and tools. Harvest what you like. Blueberries, red currants and raspberries are out. Thanks yall.

Graduation has been moved to the Moreau State Park Nature Center- 12-1:30 tomorrow June 18th! The weather reports call for rain, thunder and winds up to 50 mph! Not ideal for an outdoor setting surrounded by trees with a plastic roof! The pot luck lunch is ON! The art show will be hung in Fern House and will be taken down on July 7th and placed into their cubbies so you will have to visit me to see it!

Thanks to mama Rebecca for hosting us Wingnuts! I promise to jump in the lake as long as there is no lightning!

Slippin and sliding our way to summer! It is truly grossly humid today and 90 degrees so a sprinkler and some Johnny Pops were in order.

It has taken years of hard work by many dedicated educators in New York State and advocates at the national level to get to this point. Please take a moment today to look up your state senators and urge them to vote aye for this bill. What is not to like about setting up a pathway for more children to have a nourishing education outdoors surrounded by the natural world? This pilot program would include collaboration between both worlds in early childhood. It would allow for extremely experienced educators to come together to help write safe, practical and necessary guidelines for outdoor nature based education in NY. After the pilot, I imagine a gate will open and all the teachers and children who want to come be outside will have an opportunity to do so. And only then will I rest.

A cool, sweet spring on the farm. The Winglets have grown so much. I trust them with what I call “wandering space” so they are not as tethered to us now that they have been gifted the freedom to roam and have made good choices.

We are now spending the full day outside again. They are busy exploring and playing deep in their pretend world and Jill and I only have to intervene occasionally. Their art is beautiful. Their knowledge impressive. They are very loud lately. And emotional. They know big change is coming but they don’t understand time. I relish these last few weeks together and I snuggle them as much as I can. This love is not something I take for granted. I cry every day now after they leave. Jill and I are very lucky. This group of kids was just so wonderful. I couldn’t ask for a better life, a better job, or a better way to share my farm.

This little community we have all built is very special and we all know it.

Every year as I get to the 20 day mark I begin the painful process of letting go. This year it seems harder because I’ve known so many of my grads since they were bald and in diapers. There is no way around this loss. It is grief and it is only possible with a love so real and deep. Jill and I mother and spoil our kiddos. We keep them safe in the snow and sun. We check them constantly for signs of stress and growth. We pour into them and as a reward watch them bloom.

And then they are gone. And in a few years will have forgotten us. And when they are big only a hazy memory of us will remain from pictures and stories retold.

It’s hard. My beautiful babies are not mine anymore.
