๐Ÿ‘‹ Say "hello" to Pennye Thurmond, CER's West Tennessee Support Coordinator!

Pennye Thurmond's 25-year educational journey began as a middle school teacher, where she learned to inspire and engage at-risk students. This knowledge served her well as she transitioned to roles as an Assistant Principal and Principal, leading a turnaround school. Pennye then served 11 years with the Tennessee Department of Education as the Director of Administrator Evaluations and later as the Director of the Center of Regional Excellence.

Pennye now heads her own leadership consulting business while also providing support for CER's principals in West Tennessee.

๐Ÿ‘‹ Meet Dr. Sherry Cockerham, CER's Job Embedded Program Coordinator!

Dr. Cockerham is in her fifth year of serving the Niswonger Foundation. During her tenure with CER, Dr. Cockerham has trained instructional coaches from over 30 districts across the state in best practices of instructional coaching as well as content and curriculum development. Her passion for training mentors and supporting new teachers led her to her current CER focus: coordinating the Job Embedded Program.

Before joining the Niswonger Foundation, Dr. Cockerham served as a district math curriculum coach and high school math teacher for Johnson City Schools, retiring with over 30 years of teaching and coaching experiences in both urban and rural settings at the middle school, high school, and collegiate levels in Tennessee and Kentucky. She was even named Johnson City Schoolsโ€™ Teacher of the Year in 2007!

Congratulations to our job-embedded course educators, who finished the program in May. This year's cohort included early-career educations from Carter County Schools, Cocke County Schools, and Hawkins County School District.

CERโ€™s Job-Embedded Course is a year-long program where early-career educators learn about teaching through practical, hands-on activities. The program is specifically designed to support teachers who have pursued a nontraditional path to education, often earning a bachelorโ€™s or masterโ€™s degree in another field before deciding to seek teacher licensure later in their careers. The Job-Embedded Course gives these teachers a place to share their unique experiences, ask questions, and learn together.
