Arkansas Writers in the Schools (WITS) is a creative writing and poetry workshop held each year with students of all ages. Each year students' poems are selected to be published in the Arkansas Writers in the Schools Anthology.
We are proud to announce that Jaden Perry, 4th grader at Eastside, was selected to be one of the published authors with his poem "Eating a Turtle." He took his creativity, imagination, and unique perspective and turned it into a poem worthy of publication. Way to go Jaden!

We’re kicking off our new book, The Orphan of Ellis Island! Today, the students stepped into the shoes of immigrants arriving at Ellis Island. They experienced medical evaluations, questioning, and the excitement of receiving a ticket to enter America- but not everyone made it! It was such a fun way to bring history to life and now we’re ready to dive into our book!

We are honored to recognize a Westside Elementary Staff Member who is also an important person in the Greenbrier Counseling Department…an individual who truly embodies what it means to put students and families first. Mrs. Cassie Hodges is always willing to step up, go above and beyond, and do whatever is needed to support the social, emotional, and behavioral well-being of the students in her building. You can find her busy at work teaching lessons, calming anxiety, giving great big hugs, solving a conflict, or pumping someone up on a bad day.
Whether it is helping families after hours or on weekends, serving at every summer food pantry opportunity, finding and purchasing shoes for a student in need, completing a home visit, taking a student to a doctor’s appointment, or simply being there when a child or family needs someone to advocate for them, she never hesitates to help. Mrs. Hodges generously mentors new counselors, shares her knowledge and experience, and supports her colleagues.
She is the kind of person who sees a need and simply says, “What can I do?” and then does it. Much of her work happens quietly behind the scenes, but its impact is immeasurable.
Selfless, thoughtful, and intentional are how others describe her, and she has a remarkable ability to recognize and respond to the needs of others. Mrs. Hodges doesn’t just talk about doing “whatever it takes”—she lives it every day, and we are proud to present her with this month’s Whatever It Takes award.
