Dearest friends of Norwood Elementary School, Green Bay, WI , I started this page more than 10 years ago to create a space for each of us who have been connected in some way to Norwood Elementary School, on Norwood Avenue in West Green Bay, to reconnect, share memories and pay tribute to teachers and administration from Norwood who have had a profound impact on our lives.
Many of them were architects of our lives, outstanding educators who had our very best interests at heart.
One of the teachers who changed my life and supported me was Miss Susan Kraft, an exceptional educator and human being.
She is one of the main reasons I started this page.
For many of us, in addition to being our teacher, Miss Kraft was our encourager, our supporter, our advocate and, for some of us who were fortunate enough to have stayed in touch with her in our adult lives, a loyal, kind, thoughtful life-long friend.
At her core, as a human being, Miss Kraft had a naturally gentle, giving, thoughtful nature. She listened to understand and carefully observed behaviors without being judgemental, with her sole purpose helping others overcome whatever challenges they faced in life to develop and become their best selves.
After her years in education, Susan Kraft worked tirelessly as a volunteer with youth through literacy advocacy. She was a passionate advocate for historic preservation, serving many years as a member of the Green Bay DePere Antiquarian Society and its research committee.
In her personal life, Miss Kraft was a joyful and spunky aunt and beloved family member, a great neighbor and friend who encouraged travel and vacations with her family and extended family of friends. She was always the catalyst for fun and adventure.
On her serious side, Miss Kraft was that person who led by example, walked her talk, placing the pursuit of life- long learning at the top of her own priority list, while stressing the importance of it with every person in her life whose personal and professional growth she encouraged, fostered and promoted.
Susan Kraft had a delightful sense of humor, found joy in simple things, her gardens and afternoon meetings and chats with friends at her lovely home, quaint and well -appointed with beautiful antiques and special tea service.
Miss Kraft was very independent, stayed active and strong in will, mind and body, attending Tai Chi classes well into her 70s and seminars and retreats through which she gained deep spiritual grounding and found meaning, sharing knowledge gained without imposing it on anyone.
Miss Kraft remained, throughout her life, interested and intellectually curious. Savvy and wise from being a reader and keen observer of human behavior, she kept up on current events. She stayed in tune and touch with as many of her former students as she could find.
For those she taught and all whose lives she touched, she helped us see our own potential and chart our own paths to manifest the very best for ourselves in our lives. ...in whatever form happiness and well being took for each of us, individually.
It is with deep sadness that I share the news of Miss Kraft's passing this past Saturday. Arrangements are in the works and I will post when they become available.
Please, if you would be so kind, for Miss Kraft's family, share your memories of her here in the comments section below. Her family will be reading the comments.
My heart hurts in the loss of a true friend, mentor ...my fourth grade teacher, Susan Kraft.
