🤖 Artificial Intelligence in Everyday Life

What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)? What types of AI are making headlines today, and how are AI tools being used in areas like communication, retail, healthcare, and beyond?

Participants in Artificial Intelligence in Everyday Life explored these questions and more with Dr. Rebecca Nesvet and Robert Riordan, members of the UW-Green Bay AI Think Tank. The discussion examined real-world applications of AI, concerns raised by scientists, educators, business leaders, writers, and artists, and the important question of what role AI can and should play in our daily lives.

During the 16th and 17th centuries, Spain, France, England and other European countries were all in competition to settle the newly found Americas. Instructor Paul Timm explained early European colonization in Course #61, “First English Settlements in America”, and how their first three settlements at Roanoke, Jamestown, and Plymouth were connected to each other. He also presented some of the myths about the early history of Amerca, including John Smith and Pocahontas.

Although history can be very dry and downright boring, Paul’s presentation was both highly interesting and very enjoyable.

From our homes to our local waterways, water takes an incredible journey. LLI members discovered how sewage is treated in Green Bay in class # 49 “It All Starts at Home: Simple Choices to Protect Our Waterways.”

We learned why everyday habits matter more than you might think. We also learned some surprising facts, such as how over three million dollars’ worth of gold dust came through the NEW Water plant in 2025. We also learned how unflushables can cause costly basement backups; about the forever chemical PFAS and how we can work to reduce PFAS in the environment. In this informative two-session class, we explored how wastewater treatment works, we enjoyed a live tour, and picked up some simple tips to help protect our area waterways!

🦙 Alpaca Adventure! 🦙

We spent the day at London Dairy Alpacas, where participants met and fed these gentle animals while learning about alpaca farming, fiber production, and life on a fourth-generation farm. It was an interactive and educational experience enjoyed by all!

Mike Ajango (President of Evergreen Theater) was the keynote speaker at our Fall Kickoff yesterday.

Mike told the story about how Evergreen Theater purchased the former Hellen Keller school from the Green Bay School District:

"How Evergreen Theater came to buy Hellen Keller School...

All of a sudden, Helen Keller Elementary went on the market. And that kind of perked our ears up because we had looked at it originally. But within a week, the school board accepted an offer on the building. We said, “Wait a minute. Weren’t we going to have an opportunity to take a look at it and go through it?” No, it’s been sold. So we were a little disappointed. But I thought, “maybe there’s more to that story.

So I contacted the guy that actually made the offer, and we talked a little bit about what’s going on. To make a long story short, he decided to pull out, and the building went back for sale. So then we’re thinking, all right, how are we going to make this work? So here’s the vision part. Because it’s way more space than we need. We only need about one-third of that building. What if we would create a hub for area nonprofits in this same school building?

All these classrooms are there. And so we said, what if we would just lease out all these rooms, and we would take about a third of the building, including the gymnasium, which would become our theater because there’s no theater in the school. So being a financial advisor, I did the math on it, and we were able to offer the leases for the nonprofits at below market rate. And so we started really in earnest trying to look at things.

We approached the school district with the idea that we would be able to come into the school and not only take it over for us, because we’re a 501(c)(3) nonprofit as well, and we would make it available for other nonprofits in the area.

They loved it.

The building had been put on the market at $900,000.
And the school district had offers, I was told, over a million dollars. But they sold it to us for $725,000 because they thought that was in the best interest of the community. "

We had a great time at our Pen and Ink Drawing class in Green Bay! Participants explored a variety of pen-and-ink techniques to create form, volume, texture, and depth while drawing a variety of subjects.

A special shoutout to Tim, who participated in the class and put these techniques into practice! 🖊️🎨
