🏀🌿 APRIL ENGAGE ACADEMY HIGHLIGHTS! 🌿 🏀
What an incredible turnout at NLPA’s April Engage Academy! Our students took learning to new heights by connecting with nature AND perfecting their basketball skills! Students explored ecosystems through hands-on experiences with planting and learning about worms in the soil. Then they hit the courts where they practiced dribbling and passing. At NLPA, we believe in developing well-rounded students who appreciate both the natural world and the value of teamwork through sports. April’s Engage Academy proved once again that learning happens everywhere!
📚Thank you to all the volunteerers making this possible 🙂

Number Rolls Spark Math Magic! ✨

Absolutely blown away by our 5K students mastering place value with their number roll creations!

The creativity and engagement levels are off the charts as students design, explain, and teach each other with these simple yet powerful tools. When a kindergartner can confidently explain hundreds, tens and ones using their handmade number roll, that's when you know deep learning is happening!

So proud of our young mathematicians building essential number sense skills that will serve them for years to come!

Our reading buddies program is creating magic across our learning community! 🌟 Today, our secondary studio learners paired up with their elementary buddies for another wonderful session of shared reading.

It's beautiful to witness the natural mentorship that develops when older and younger learners connect through stories. Our secondary students gain confidence in their leadership skills while practicing patience and empathy, and our elementary learners blossom with the special attention and encouragement from their older peers.

These cross-age connections strengthen our school community and create lasting relationships that extend beyond the classroom. When students see each other in hallways or at school events, their faces light up with recognition and connection!

Wisdom Wednesday: Waseca Edition

Over the years, the Waseca Reading Program has become a standard in many Montessori classrooms. It is structured to provide a systematic and sequential presentation of the phonetic elements used in the English language.

The program uses a four-step approach: after you have introduced a phonetic element, the child uses the movable alphabet to spell, or encode, the word depicted on a picture card. Next, the child decodes the phonetic information by matching a picture card to its label. Then the child further practices decoding by reading the phonogram booklet and doing writing practice.

Wisdom Wednesday!

Our Secondary students dove into history this week with an engaging lesson on the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. Students explored the causes, consequences, and lasting impact of this significant event through primary sources, videos, and interactive discussions.

Our second Engage Academy was a tremendous hit! Students dove into two fantastic activities today:

🏃‍♀️ Track & Field: Young athletes raced, jumped, and threw with enthusiasm and determination

🧪 STEM: Future scientists and engineers explored hands-on experiments and creative problem-solving

We had an outstanding turnout with students fully immersed in both activities. The energy and excitement were contagious as everyone participated with great enthusiasm!

Thank you to all our dedicated staff and volunteers who made today possible: especially Sarah R and Jeni T! We're thrilled to see such fantastic engagement from our NLPA community!

Happy Pi Day from NLPA! 🥧

Today at our first all-school assembly, we celebrated the culmination of our week of kindness! For every act of kindness spotted throughout the week, teachers handed out kindness tickets that students used to vote for which teachers would receive a special pie.

After tallying all the votes, our three winners were:
- Ms. Harhay
- Chef Scott
- Mr. Bennett

Thank you to these wonderful staff members for spreading kindness throughout our school, and to all our students who participated in making NLPA a kinder place! What a sweet way to celebrate Pi Day! 💞

Today's Wisdom Wednesday was truly special thanks to all our incredible volunteers who shared their career journeys and expertise! From entrepreneurs, U.S. Marines, engineers, to welders, hvac, gelogogists and many more, these generous professionals donated their time to inspire the next generation.

Their stories of challenges overcome, lessons learned, and successes achieved provided invaluable insights to all of our students! Special thanks to each volunteer who opened up about their unique path – your wisdom creates ripples that will influence career decisions for years to come.

Today our team took a well-deserved break from the usual hustle to experience sound therapy meditation. It was amazing to see everyone unwind and recharge during our professional development day.

The gentle sounds of singing bowls and chimes created a peaceful atmosphere as our team members found moments of calm and clarity. These mindfulness practices aren't just good for mental well-being—they help foster creativity and strengthen our collaborative spirit.

NLPA is looking into adding sound therapy as a music special elective that also heals our frequencies and sets everyone up for succes.

Special thanks to Ksenia Riza and Ace for this refreshing session. We're committed to supporting our staff's holistic well-being, and today was a perfect example of putting those values into action.

Wisdom Wednesday!

The art studio is blanketed in white today as lower el finishes their latest winter wonderland! This project has been a magical journey of blending traditional illustration with 3D elements.

What I love most about mixing 2D and 3D techniques is how it preserves the warmth of hand-drawn art while adding the dimension and atmosphere that 3D brings. It's like having the best of both artistic worlds!
