🌟 Community Helpers Unit Complete! 🌟

We officially wrapped up our Community Helpers Unit, and these boys were BUSY! 🚒👮‍♂️👷‍♂️👩‍⚕️📬📚

Over the past two weeks, we explored the people who help our community every day and, more importantly, what they do, the tools they use, and why their jobs matter. We learned about firefighters, construction workers, doctors and dentists, mail carriers, police officers, librarians, and garbage collectors.

But we didn’t just talk about them… we became them! ❤️

We fought chalk fires after climbing numbered firefighter ladders, built structures like construction workers, treated patients in our own doctor’s office, matched Band-Aids to injuries using math, sorted and delivered mail, wrote and addressed our own letters, protected our pretend city as police officers, directed traffic, organized our library, and even built garbage trucks from shapes and filled them with our own “trash.” 🚒🏗️🩺✉️🚦📖🚛

Along the way, we continued building our kindergarten-readiness skills by working on letter C and its sound, uppercase and lowercase C, circles, the color red, counting and early addition, sorting and matching, handwriting, cutting, gluing, fine-motor skills, problem solving, following directions, teamwork, and imaginative play. ✂️✏️🔴⭕️

One of my favorite parts of these units is watching a topic move beyond a worksheet or lesson and become something the kids can experience, play, build, investigate, and connect to the world around them. 🌱

I’d say our little community is in very capable hands. 😂❤️

We just wrapped up our two-week All About Me unit and we packed a lot into it! 🪞💙

The boys practiced their names, ages, birthdays, addresses, phone numbers, and what to do in an emergency. We explored our families, favorite things, emotions, body parts, and the many ways we are alike and wonderfully different. We even compared our heights and studied our reflections to create self-portraits!

We brought everything to life with personalized books, family puzzles, favorite-things games, emotion matching, body-part activities, rectangle birthday cakes, and plenty of writing, coloring, cutting, and creating. Along the way, we also focused on capital and lowercase B, the color blue, and rectangles.

A whole lot of learning and two very proud boys taking home books celebrating everything that makes them uniquely them! 💛

Just another day at Small Beginnings. 💛

A little learning, a lot of exploring, cheering each other on, testing those brave little legs… and occasionally making Mrs. Stephanie question just how high we REALLY need to climb. 😂

🌊 Beach & Ocean Unit Recap! 🦈🐠🦀

We’ve officially wrapped up our beach & ocean unit, and we packed SO much learning into it! Over the past couple of weeks, the boys explored the ocean through hands-on science, early literacy, math, art, movement, sensory play, and lots of curiosity.

🐠 We experimented with how fish gills work, learned how whales and dolphins breathe through blowholes, created our own aquariums, and explored waves with oceans in a bottle.

🏖️ We made sand dough to discover why wet sand holds together, built baking soda sandcastles and used blue vinegar “waves” to wash them away, and enjoyed plenty of sensory beach play.

🦈 Even our math had an ocean twist! We fed a very hungry shark by counting sea critters, comparing numbers, and practicing simple addition. We also went “deep-sea fishing” for letters, numbers, and colors and practiced our letter of the week, A, through tracing, writing, and crafts.

And of course, there was plenty of creativity and movement mixed in—from making shark tooth necklaces to scuttling like crabs and moving like different sea animals. 😂

This is exactly what I love about our small-group setting. 💛 One theme can turn into science experiments, kindergarten-readiness skills, movement, art, and real hands-on experiences while giving each child plenty of individual attention.

🌱 Now enrolling at Small Beginnings Homegrown Childcare! 🌱

I have openings in my small home-based childcare program in Greeley for kiddos ages 3–5! 💛

With the new school year starting, I also wanted to share something I’m offering specifically for teacher families! 🍎

I know paying for a childcare spot all summer when you’re home doesn’t make a whole lot of sense 😅 so teacher families can keep their child’s spot throughout the summer without paying the regular weekly rate. You’ll only pay a daily rate on the days you actually need care!

A little about what we do around here:

🏡 Small group with lots of individual attention
✏️ Preschool-style learning & kindergarten prep
🎨 Crafts, science experiments and lots of hands-on activities
🌳 Outside time, walks and occasional field trips
🍎 Breakfast, lunch & snacks included
📱 Brightwheel updates throughout the day
❤️ And most importantly, a place that feels more like going to a second home than going to a big childcare center!

We’re constantly learning, but I also really want kids to have time to play, be silly, get messy, make friends and enjoy being little. 😊

I’m a former Junior Kindergarten Lead Teacher, Level 2 Early Childhood Professional working toward Level 3, CPR/First Aid certified, and a mom myself. I’m also currently working through the childcare licensing process!
