There is magic in mud.
Children who play in yards with dirt and mud have more types of friendly gut bacteria, according to a medical study in Finland. Exposure to germs and good bacteria create healthier immune systems.
Splashing and patting in mud is a great way for children to get tactile and develop skills with sensory play.
Mud play opportunities can be as simple as going outside after a rainy day to explore puddles. If you prefer a more controlled environment, you can start with a shallow bucket on the porch or in the grass.
Remember to let the child lead. Some kiddos may love the mess while others prefer to keep clean.
