Some of our faculty spent the weekend with Dr. Leroy Hood’s team and an incredible group of collaborators in Hamilton. One highlight was getting the opportunity to discuss the future of data driven health and how we can bring that future to rural areas with Dr. Hood and Dr. Michael Merzenich— true visionaries and mentors to our team. Another highlight was getting to meet Dr. Mary Brunkow and congratulate her on her recent Nobel Prize!

🔬 Meet Hope Gasvoda
Hope is the Summer Internship Program Coordinator at the Weissman Hood Institute and a full-time Research Assistant in the Hensley-McBain Lab. She first joined WHI as a Student Assistant during her undergraduate studies at the University of Providence, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Forensic Science Biology with a minor in Chemistry. After graduating, she transitioned into a full-time research role and now helps lead both research efforts and mentorship initiatives.

Originally from a ranch outside of Big Sandy, MT, Hope brings a strong work ethic and deep curiosity to everything she does. She completed the WHI internship herself in 2023 and now coordinates the program that helped shape her own path in science. She’s passionate about supporting the next generation of researchers while continuing to contribute to important lab work in immunology and neurodegeneration. 🧪🌾👩‍🔬

SUMMER INTERN SPOTLIGHT
🧪 Meet Sayre McElroy
Sayre is a second-year intern at WHI and a recent graduate of Cascade High School. She will be completing her Associate of Science at Great Falls College and plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in biosciences to continue her work in wet lab research. This summer, she is working with Dr. Andrea Grindeland to investigate biomarkers—biological signals in blood or tissue that indicate disease—in relation to Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), a neurological condition that affects deer and other cervids. Sayre has enjoyed gaining a deeper understanding of the scientific process behind publishing research and is excited to assist with data collection and contribute to future publications. 🧬🦌📄

SUMMER INTERN SPOTLIGHT:
🧬 Meet Nyla O’Brien
Nyla is a senior at the University of Providence, majoring in Biology and minoring in Forensic Science. One highlight of her internship so far has been learning how animal models are used to study human disease. As she continues rotating through different labs, Nyla is especially looking forward to learning about Chronic Wasting Disease and exploring genotyping techniques—tools used to study the deer prion gene and its role in prion-related illness. 🧫🧬
