Congratulations MMRHS Ultimate Frisbee Club!
History has been made. This weekend, the Monument Ultimate Frisbee team traveled to their first-ever Massachusetts Division 2 State Championship and walked away with the state title! Battling cold rain and a season filled with injuries, the team swept Saturday’s pool play and fought through the knockout stages on Sunday. The final match against Boston College High School was a grueling, three hour test of the stamina and depth of the roster. Trailing for most of the game, MonU showed incredible composure, digging deep to make a late scoring run and secure a thrilling 15-13 victory. This historic milestone belongs to our deep, selfless team of players who gave their all, and to the incredible families who braved the elements to support the team all weekend long. Go MonU!

Keen observation helped Kate Casey ‘04 acquire the skills to craft a business by hand. Witnessing others' mistakes and learning how to sustain a functioning studio practice and run it as a small business helped the mixed-media artist to launch Peg Woodworking in 2014. After falling in love with woodworking and becoming a mom, this Brooklyn-based business owner has some stellar advice for the next generation of high-school students: “Get as close as possible to the path you hope to pursue—via internship or other hands-on experience—while being mindful that getting proficient in a bunch of different areas is never going to hurt while you're figuring [your primary passion] out.”

Learning to see the forest through the trees is a life skill Katherine Oberwager ’07 learned in high school—one she attributes to supportive teachers who encouraged her to reach her full potential. “Their openness created a safe space that promoted advocacy,” says Oberwager, a psychiatric and mental health nurse practitioner at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. After studying psychology at Smith College, Oberwager took an administrative job at Boston Children’s Hospital where a holistic nursing model resonated with her. Tuition reimbursement allowed her to complete prerequisites before enrolling in a direct-entry program at the University in Southern Maine for non-nurses who want to become nurse practitioners. “You don’t have to have your whole life figured out in high school; things eventually fall into place,” says Oberwager, who is among this year’s 40 Under Forty honorees at Berkshire Community College. Her advice for current students contemplating next steps? “Human connection is more important than ever, and having one trusted adult—so you don’t have to carry heaviness alone—can make a world of difference.”
