Why we practice scales with phrasing. If you use scales and arpeggios to pursue more even phrasing, or more clear articulation, or to shape your crescendo and decrescendo, or to attain greater speed, then, providing you know what you’re doing, those things are what you’ll get out of them.

What are the benefits for pianists in learning and practicing all scales modes? Answer: Any time I’ve studied a new language, whether half-heartedly (the norm) or more comprehensively (rarer), I have often begun with exhaustive, repetitious work in conjugation, declension, and so forth. Ich bin, du bist, ihr seid, wir sind. Annus, anne, annum, anni, anno. There is a purpose.....

Here's a practice tip that I use to ensure that I can play every bar in the piece and make the best use of my practice time.

When you plan your practice sessions in advance you are much more likely to make consistent progress. It's easy to get into the habit of always starting at the first bar and muddling through to the end without any real plan of improving things.

Always start with the bars that you can't play.
You'll see the way I divide a piece below. The aim is to move the bars up a section each practice until you can label the whole piece GREEN.
