The 13th of May 1888: the day slavery was abolished in Brazil after almost 400 years. Today also marks the start of the annual Bembé do Mercado celebrations: the biggest publicly held candomblé ceremony that has taken over the streets of Santo Amaro da Purificação on this date since 1889. A celebration rooted in resistance and the right to be seen. Our Samba Ala are honored to be representing the final day of the Bembé (Saturday) where devotees bring offerings to Oxum & Yemanjá down to the sea in SF Carnaval in less than two weeks.
What else you’ll see us represent on the streets of the mission:
💙 Homage to the Sambadeiras & our matriarch Nicinha do Samba
💙 The flora and fauna of the “mangue” important mangrove ecosystem of the recôncavo
💙 The jewels of the Irmandade da Boa Morte which bought the freedom of thousands of enslaved African and Afro Brazilian people
💙 Homage to important figures of MPB from the recôncavo: Caetano Veloso & Maria Bethania, and their influence in the anti military dictatorship artistic movement of Tropicalia
Our theme this year RECÔNCAVO: UMBIGO DO MUNDO honors the fertile ground that birthed Samba, Capoeira, Maculelê, as the pillars of Brazilian Popular Arts Culture we see today.
Today, we take time to honor all the Black women and men of this region who created the rhythms, dances, foods, art & aesthetics, and preserved the spiritual traditions that we feel so passionate and soul-full about today ❤️ and to reflect on the immense privilege it is to receive the beautiful fruits of their labor.
Viva o Bembé do Mercado! Viva Dona Nicinha do Samba! Viva o Recôncavo Baiano!

KVMR Celtic Festival 2026 has commenced!
Christian’s Festival Welcome –
Christian here, 2026 KVMR Celtic Festival Producer just extended our warmest welcome to the 28th annual festival. It is an honor for me to be able to produce such an amazing festival that serves our community in so many ways. Not only is this KVMR’s largest fundraising event, but it’s also a community gathering like no other festival. With all the uncertainty in the world today, it’s time for all of us to take a “time out”, let go and have some fun. This is a family friendly event and children are encouraged to attend. In fact, due to recognition of the issue of affordability, we have raised the age of children for free admission. Children ages 11 and under are now free!
With the KVMR community at its heart, there is so much more behind the scenes of this festival that can’t be measured. The 45 Area Managers that work so hard to make this the best Celtic Festival in the Western States. Each of the Area Managers commit a vast amount of time and energy to ensure our festival is clean, friendly and safe. And the hundreds of volunteers make the unsurmountable amount of work to put on a festival possible. Hat’s off to all the volunteers, many with years of dedication. Also, a shout out to the past Producers that brought this festival to its epic standard. 28 successful years!
The amazing Musicians that grace our stage are carefully curated and chosen by our Artist Selection Committee. They probably spend the most time preparing for our festival, listening and finding the best available acts to perform at our festival. The goal is to carry on the true traditions of the Celtic culture while embracing the new and upcoming talent that, in a few years, will play on the Mainstages of upcoming festivals. Also, a special acknowledgement to all the Session Players, Pipers, Local Musicians, all who add something special to this festival, many donating their time and services contributing to KVMR.
Living History Re-enactors, Fairies and Wishing Trees, Highland Games, Celtic Animals, Magicians, Awesome Food and Libations, Kids Activities, Workshops, On-site Camping, Fun for all. A very special thanks goes out to all that contribute to bring this community event to light. And lest not forget all the local businesses and sponsors that assist us in so many ways. Our contributors and business owners know the value of the KVMR Celtic Festival.
It takes a village and I’m so grateful to be able to serve that community. Please support KVMR Radio and join us at the KVMR Celtic Festival. Come for the Music and Stay for the Magic!
WIth Gratitude,
Christian Gutt, Festival Producer
