We are pleased to announce that GIS teacher Leslie Hopping is the recipient of the 2021 Jody VanTine Award for Outstanding Educator!

Below are excerpts from her nomination letters:

Mrs. Hopping has a remarkable ability to get students to buy-in to the learning process. She gets to know her students individually and by showing them how much she cares about them.

Mrs. Hopping has interactive projects for students that keeps them engaged and interested all throughout the day. Whether she is working with kids in small groups or Zooming with 20-40 students at once, she somehow managed to have meaningful, personal interactions with each of her students.

Mrs. Hopping addressed the emotional challenges of remote learning and acknowledged the difficult feelings that kids were experiencing.

There were multiple occasions in her driveway where families could “drive-through” and pick up project materials and say hello. This helped create a meaningful connection with students learning remotely and to help make sure they felt seen and heard.

Mrs. Hopping is normally a 4th Grade Math/Science Teacher at GIS, but this year she taught every subject to all of the remote students in the entire 5th Grade!

Please join us in congratulating Leslie Hopping!

How Does Friction Affect Speed? Update from grant recipient Julie Wilcox!

GIS teacher Julie Wilcox used remote control cars funded by a GEF grant to conduct an experiment with her classes: How does Friction Affect Speed?

They tested cars on five surfaces: asphalt, rubber tire chips, carpet, grass and tile floor. Each trial was 20 meters. They discovered experimental error, assembled advice for future classes, and tested whether predictions proved true.

“The students had a lot of fun while learning how to relate distance, speed and time in a realistic, hands on setting. Between my four classes, I have about 86 kids this year who got to enjoy this project. I am also sharing them with Sarah Giannetto, who is currently teaching 6th grade, so another 40'ish kids will get to experiment as well.”
