AUTOMATION AND THE FUTURE OF WORK
Advances in technology, including artificial intelligence, can increasingly displace the traditional workforce. How is automation liable to change our understanding and experience of work and other aspects of our lives? Automation is often defended as good or desirable because it improves efficiency. Join us for a conversation about what other values and principles should direct the adoption and design of automation in our social, economic, and political lives.

Hi all! We are very excited to welcome Dr. Jonathon Jacobs to campus. Dr. Jacobs will give a Titus-Hepp Lecture on Friday March 29th at 3:30pm in Samson-Talbot Hall 210. The the topic of the talk is as follows:
“Agency, Punishment, and the Liberal State”
In a liberal state (such as the U.S. or U.K.) there are important relations between the political/legal order and civil society; each can reinforce (or weaken) the other. Current practices and policies of incarceration in the U.S. and U.K. diminish offenders as agents in ways that diminish the civility of society and weaken the political/legal order. The diminution of agency is a centrally important issue in several respects. How can it be addressed from within the values and principles of the liberal state?

Hi all! We are very excited to welcome Dr. Jonathon Jacobs to campus. Dr. Jacobs will give a Goodspeed Lecture this Thursday March 28th at 4:30pm in Higley Auditorium. The the topic of the talk is as follows:
"Jewish Tradition and the Judeo-Christian Tradition"
What are distinctive contributions of Judaism and Jewish tradition to the ‘Judeo-Christian Tradition’? Do Jewish thought and commitment to Judaism look very different from inside them and from the perspective of the Western cultural/intellectual heritage overall? Is the Judeo-Christian tradition significant mainly as a source and origin or are its contemporary resonances also of the first importance? In what respects does it remain a vital, living element of contemporary political and intellectual culture?
We hope to see you there!
