Getting my practice time in this afternoon included messing around with Nashville Skyline Rag. I recently discovered a video of the Areo-plain Band 1972 on the David Frost Show…they were cooking that day including on this tune so I was inspired to play around with it at their tempo of 152bpm and yes I am using a more open right hand technique than usual for me, I haven’t gotten away from the closed hand but my exploration of hybrid picking has led to some new approaches that I’m liking in certain situations.

I was going through some things and heard Norman Blake make a reference to this tune hi dad in the morning he said Byron Berline’s father was responsible for making it up. I have played it before but not in years so I tried to play it to see if the muscle memory was still around. I got something close to it at least..I think.

Instead of driving up the Fretboard Summit yesterday to hang with the 3Bender Guitar folks and play lots of cool guitars I ended up spending all day pumping water and gutting our finished basement…it’s in the dry out phase now so time for a little bit of guitar playing while we rest up for the next phase. 😞
