5th Fret Productions

We played a game of musical offices this spring at the Eisner Center. I just now got things unpacked and I’m starting to gear up to kick off another year as the Coordinator of American Roots Music Studies at Denison University in fact this will be my 10th year with the Denison American Roots program and I believe it’ll be the best one yet!!!!

Last week I tried a guitar break over the Tyler Childers song Feathered Indians that my daughters were listening to. Since then they’ve made a list of songs they want to hear me play over. I don’t know if I’ll make it down the entire list but it’s a fun idea so here is a pass on the Red Clay Strays song Wondering Why going along with my practice concept of “what would I have played in the studio that day if I had been on the session?” And not just learning the existing parts. And as usual I’m playing my 3Bender Guitar telecaster .

Getting some practice time in this afternoon on the 3Bender Guitar guitar. I tried out a break on John Prine ‘s souvenirs which is one of my favorite all time songs. This live recording is just him and Marty Stuart live so there was some room to pick. My all time dream job would have been to back up John Prine.

Since I was a kid I’d play along to albums, not always trying to learn the parts but often trying to make up parts of my own. Asking myself what would I have done on this song if I had been in the studio that day? I don’t do as much of that style of practice as I used to but on a recent road trip with my oldest daughter where we were swapping songs we liked, she got me really digging Tyler Childers so this morning I sat down and played through a few tracks with the 3Bender Guitar tele. This is some fun music to explore. Room to play but also trying to stay out of the way at the same time. That would be again band to be in I believe.
