REACH School - River's Edge Academy Charter School A free personalized learning public charter for grades K-12 in Southern Oregon. REACH uses an innovative approach to K-12 education.

We work to create partnerships between public education and parents. As a personalized learning charter school, we use a hybrid program that uses home-based learning and onsite classes to meet the needs of individual students.

As we get ready to return to school, we want to introduce a newer member of our team, Michelle!

Michelle started at the front deck at the end of April 2026. She shared that she chose to work with us because “it is an awesome school that truly cares about their kids. I have found a wonderful team of people here.”

For fun, Michelle enjoys crocheting, painting, paper quilling, and other crafting projects. She also nature walks and kayaking, too.

This summer, she took a vacation and visited friends and family in the Willamette Valley and Olympia, Washington. She has also been holding down the office!

Lastly, she shared, “I am excited to get to know the kids this year, to start their days with a happy good morning when they come in the door.”

Seniors! Have you heard of the OSAC? The OSAC Scholarship Application is one application that applies students for many scholarships with one fell swoop. Over $10 million is awarded through 600 scholarships that use this application.

OSAC opens on November 1 this year, so put that date on your calendar as you are planning your college and scholarship application timeline!

Let’s talk about applying to colleges and scholarships. And you might be thinking… It’s August! Do we really need to be talking about this? And the answer is simple: yes.

Many colleges and scholarships prioritize early applications. For state programs and scholarships, they often award funds based on need and application date. So the sooner you can apply, the better!

Right now, incoming seniors should have this in mind. They should be working on:
✏ Deciding which colleges they want to apply to.
✏ Choosing scholarships to apply to (don’t forget OSAC!).
✏ Working on application essays.
✏ Requesting letters of recommendation.
✏ Taking (or retaking) the SAT or ACT if needed.

Many colleges offer early action applications until November, which often come with discounted application costs and priority consideration. But this does depend on the school so make sure to research the schools you are applying to! These benefits often end in October or November, so get your applications in.

Additionally, the sooner you apply to schools, the sooner you can apply to department-, program-, and school-specific scholarships.

Is your student graduating this year? If they’re planning to pursue college, you need to know about the FAFSA.

FAFSA stands for “Free Application for Federal Student Aid”. It is the form students complete to determine their eligibility for financial aid for college, career schools, and some certificate programs.

Submitting the FAFSA may qualify students for:
✏ Federal grants (such as Pell Grants)
✏ Federal student loans
✏ Work-study programs
✏ State financial aid
✏ Many college scholarships and institutional aid

The federal deadline for FAFSA is in June, but Oregon encourages students to submit the FAFSA as soon as possible. Oregon offers something called the Oregon Opportunity Grant, which uses the FAFSA to determine qualifications. They offer awards until funds are depleted, so you want to ensure your FAFSA is submitted sooner rather than later.

The FAFSA is free! And when you have your information gathered, it is relatively quick. So put this one your to-do list!

If you are heading into high school, there are a couple important tests you need to know about: the SAT and the ACT.

Both are standardized tests that help colleges determine a student’s academic standing. While many colleges are test-optional, including an SAT or ACT score can help candidates strengthen their applications.

So what’s the difference and why should you choose one over the other?

Meet our Executive Director, Wendy Bogard!

"I'm honored to serve as the Executive Director of River's Edge Academy Charter School (REACH), where I've had the privilege of working for the past five years. I believe every child deserves an educational environment that meets their unique needs because there is no one-size-fits-all approach to learning. As both an educator and a parent of four young adults who have experienced Christian, homeschool, charter, and public education, I've seen firsthand that the right educational path can change throughout a student's journey.

I believe children are remarkably resilient when they are supported through change, but remaining in a learning environment that is no longer meeting their needs can have lasting effects. Every child deserves an educational setting where they feel safe, challenged, valued, and able to thrive.

When I'm not at school, you'll usually find me tending to my garden, caring for my many plants, or spending time with my four dogs. I believe strong relationships, compassion, and a willingness to embrace change help both students and adults thrive, and I am honored to serve the REACH community as we continue to support every student's unique educational journey."

As we near our return to school, we want to recognize and introduce our school leadership! First up is Vice Principal Annie Burnham.

Annie taught middle and high school classes for five years before moving into school leadership. Since then, Annie has been in leadership for 10 years.

Annie shared, “I always love direct interaction with students, but also saw the bigger landscape of education and wanted to make an impact on school systems in a way that supports the teachers and parents who come around students for their success. That led me to administrative and leadership roles in the schools where I have worked. I am starting my second year with REACH, and I'm so excited to work with our amazing team of teachers and staff again! I enjoy getting to know students and their families, especially through the Early College program, where I can help guide students toward a fulfilling education and career path.”

When not working with our students, Annie enjoys music and theatre. She plays guitar and sings at her church and has participated in several musical theatre productions over the past few years. Her favorite role was the Tsarina in One Eleven Theatre's recent production of Anastasia. She also enjoys reading fantasy and science fiction books.

This summer, she got to spend a week on Maui with her family at the end of June! She says, “It was such a fun time exploring, snorkeling, and relaxing on the beach. My kids and I saw sea turtles, fish, and even a moray eel while snorkeling!”

Annie, we appreciate all you do! Thank you for your hard work for REACH!
