📖 The Pros & Cons of Reading: Why We Champion It at Rogue Christian Academy
At RCA, we are unapologetic about the power of great books to shape young souls for Veritas • Sapientia • Gratia — Truth, Wisdom, and Grace. Reading isn’t just an academic skill; it’s a vital part of forming hearts that love God and love what is good, true, and beautiful.
The Pros:
✅ Forms the mind and character — Great literature stretches imagination, cultivates empathy, teaches virtue, and trains students to think critically and biblically.
✅ Deepens family bonds — Reading aloud together builds memories, sparks meaningful conversations, and models the delight of learning.
✅ Equips for life and faith — From Scripture to classics and beyond, stories help our children discern truth, grow in wisdom, and see the grand narrative of God’s redemptive work.
✅ Creates lifelong learners — Readers become better communicators, leaders, and followers of Christ.
The Cons (because honesty matters):
❌ It requires disciplined time (easier to scroll).
❌ It can challenge comfortable assumptions.
❌ Some of the best books feel demanding at first.
Yet those very “cons” are what make reading so transformative. The effort yields fruit that lasts into eternity.
Parents, your example is the most powerful lesson of all. When your children see you reaching for the Bible first — and then for stories that point toward the True Story — they learn that the life of the mind and the life of faith go hand in hand.
This summer (and all year long), we invite your family to join the Battle of the Great Books! In addition to the rich classical literature woven throughout our school year, this program gives students the opportunity to dive deeper into timeless works, discuss them thoughtfully with peers, and grow in their love for excellence.
Let’s raise a generation of readers who think clearly, love deeply, and follow Jesus faithfully.
