Chess is on for tomorrow. We will have limited adult helpers, and it looks like a decent-sized crowd will be attending, so any adults who know how to play, please feel free to sit down with any child who is ready for a game.

You do not need to bring anything; some people do bring their own boards. You are welcome to bring your own board, but it is not necessary. The only thing you may want to bring is a bottle of water.

Bad news, folks—no chess learn and play in February.

1: There is a funeral at the same day/time at the church. We want to extend peace and grace to the family.
2: Lots of people have been sick, and rather than it dying down, the stores being packed with people buying supplies due to bad weather seems to have kept it going. We want to do our part to keep everyone healthy and well.

See you in March, the first Thursday of the month at noon! Remember we have a prize for utilizing or identifying a certain tatic next time we meet, name that tatic below! (Hint: you'll see it in our last 2 or 3 past posts!)

How to Fork with a Knight

1. Find your knight
Look at where your knight is on the board.

2. Remember how a knight moves

2 squares in one direction

then 1 square to the side
(It looks like an “L”)

3. Look for two targets
Check if there is a square your knight can jump to that would attack two pieces at the same time.

4. Especially look for the king
If your knight can attack the king, that’s a check — and the king must move!

5. Play the knight move
Move your knight to that square and say (in your head or out loud):
👉 “Fork!”

6. Win a piece next turn
After the king moves, you usually get to capture the other piece.

♟️ Chess Learn & Play – February Challenge ♟️

Over the break, we’ll be chatting here on Facebook about a specific chess move and sharing simple questions and answers you can talk through with your players.

When we meet again in February, any player who is able to spot and play that move in a real game will earn a small prize 🎉 We will have multiple prizes available.

This isn’t about winning — it’s about recognizing opportunities, building confidence, and having fun with chess together.

We’re excited to keep learning going over the break and can’t wait to see who plays/spots it first in February!
