In observance of Yakama Nation Treaty Days, last Friday and today our students participated in a meaningful Treaty Day learning experience led by parents Dillon Begay and Courtney Fasthorse, along with our JOM Para, Jasmin Mayokok. ❤️🖤💛
Through storytelling, discussion, dance, and hands-on learning, students explored the history and significance of the 1855 Yakama Treaty—a promise that continues to protect Yakama fishing rights, cultural traditions, and connection to the land. Students learned how Yakama leaders worked to ensure future generations could continue fishing, hunting, gathering, and practicing their traditions.
A special thank you to Keanu Fasthorse-Begay for sharing traditional dance and to Rodger Begay for sharing his experience and pride as a provider. Students also learned how young people today continue to honor and preserve cultural traditions passed down through generations.
We are grateful to our parent volunteers and Ms. Mayokok for sharing their knowledge and helping our students deepen their understanding of Yakama history, culture, and the importance of honoring treaty rights and traditions for future generations.
