What happens when someone who has spent years helping educators prepare students for high-stakes exams finally sits for the exam himself?

After 30 years as a paramedic, John Spencer, Chief Operations Officer at Platinum Educational Group, took the NREMT Paramedic exam for the first time.

He passed! 🎉 But the experience gave him something even more valuable: a firsthand look at the pressure, uncertainty, and nerves students experience on exam day.

In his latest From the COO’s Desk, John shares what he learned from finally doing the thing he’s been encouraging others to do.

Thank you for a great National Association of EMS Educators 2026 in Reno! 🚑

We loved connecting with EMS educators, colleagues, partners, and friends from across the country—and were proud to sponsor lunch this year!

Congratulations to Wellington W. Jackson, recipient of the NAEMSE Unsung Hero Award; Chad Massie, a “Legends That Walk Among Us” Award recipient; and Nannette Lloyd, winner of a free NAEMSE 2026 registration through our item reviewer drawing. 👏

Thank you, NAEMSE, for another great symposium and for all you do for EMS education.

Term of the Month!

This month’s term is the 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 (𝗖𝗥𝗔), a scenario-based assessment that evaluates a student’s ability to apply clinical knowledge and judgment throughout an evolving EMS patient encounter.

Modeled after the NREMT Clinical Judgment domain, the CRA challenges students to interpret patient information, prioritize problems, make appropriate clinical decisions, and evaluate the patient’s response to care. Rather than focusing primarily on fact recall, it emphasizes clinical reasoning and decision-making.

What happens when a new hire is technically doing the job—but the team around them starts to change?

That can be one of the hardest situations to navigate as a leader.

Culture fit shouldn’t mean hiring people who all think and work the same way. Different perspectives are valuable. But there’s also a point at which a mismatch in shared values, collaboration, or accountability begins to affect both the employee and the team.

And when that happens, leadership has an obligation to address it—not ignore it.

I wrote about culture fit vs. culture add, what meaningful support for a new hire actually looks like, and the difficult decision leaders eventually face when the mismatch doesn’t improve.

When the New Hire Doesn’t Fit

We’re all set up and ready for the 2026 National Association of EMS Educators (NAEMSE) Symposium in Reno! 🎉 It’s already been a great day, and we’re looking forward to seeing everyone at this evening’s reception and at our exhibit tomorrow.

A special congratulations to Wellington W. Jackson of Oakland, California, recipient of the 2026 NAEMSE Unsung Hero Award, recognizing his service, dedication, and impact on EMS education.

We’re also excited to celebrate Chad Massie, M.Ed., NRP, FESI II, a 2026 “Legends That Walk Among Us” Award recipient. His commitment to EMS education has been recognized throughout his career, including being named EMS Instructor of the Year by Lima Memorial in 2023.

It’s especially meaningful to see people who are important to the Platinum Educational Group community recognized for their work and the impact they continue to make in EMS education.

👏 Congratulations, Wellington and Chadwick — well deserved!

We look forward to connecting with friends, colleagues, and partners over the next few days. If you’re at NAEMSE, come say hello!
