Blessed Memorial of St. Charles Lwanga & Companions!
St. Charles Lwanga was born in the Kingdom of Buganda, the southern part of modern Uganda, circa 1860. He served as a page in the court of King Mwanga II. As part of the king's effort to resist foreign colonization, he strongly resisted Christianity and executed many converts beginning in 1885. The king also r***d young men and punished those that resisted. St. Joseph Mukasa, catechist and lay leader, reproached the king and was beheaded on November 15, 1887. The same day, Charles Lwanga sought baptism from a missionary priest. On May 25, 1886, King Mwanga II summoned all of the pages of his court and demanded they renounce Christianity. Led by St. Charles Lwanga, they all refused their orders, were arrested and condemned to death. On June 3 of that year, Charles Lwanga was executed by burning fire. While was being burnt, St. Charles remained peaceful as he prayed for his executioner and pleaded for his conversion.
St. Charles Lwanga and the other Martyrs of Uganda were canonized in 1964 during a pastoral visit by Pope Paul VI. The Basilica of the Uganda Martyrs was built at the site of the executions. An indigenous religious congregation, the Brothers of St. Charles Lwanga, was founded in 1927 with the focus of educating Ugandan children and since grown to include Kenya and Tanzania.
