When Stephanie Vogelzang ’07 wanted to start a physical education and athletic department at the classical Christian school she helped found in Arlington, Virginia, she turned to the dean of Calvin’s School of Education, Brian Bolt.
Bolt, who is also the golf coach, introduced her to golfer and education major Jackson Glanzer ’25. Vogelzang was beyond thrilled when Glanzer said yes to the daunting task of becoming Tyndale’s first athletic director and building a program from the ground up. She says she knew Glanzer was the right hire when he took one look at the school parking lot and its proximity to a local park and told her, “I can work with that.”
In addition to teaching physical and outdoor education, Glanzer also launched a running club and introduced competitive track and field this spring. He says he is committed to building a “robust disciple-making program where students know the joy of sport.” Vogelzang says, “Our kids and families adore him.”

For Ben Darin, teaching is about more than content. It’s about shaping a positive learning experience for students that cultivates belonging and imagination for their future. 🌱
As a science and STEM teacher at Forest Hills Eastern Middle School, Darin’s courses include unique offerings like Green Architecture and Flight and Space, a career-connected applied STEM curriculum through Project Lead The Way. These hands-on courses inspire students to think broadly about how they could apply science to a variety of career pathways.
Ben has been recognized for his inclusive, supportive classroom and leadership skills. In 2025, he received a Michigan Lottery Excellence in Education Award, which recognizes outstanding educators across Michigan.
Ben knew he wanted to keep growing—not just as a teacher, but as a leader. That’s what drew him to Calvin University’s Master of Education program. “I wanted a local, hybrid option, and Calvin offered exactly that. I’ve always heard great things about Calvin’s undergraduate programs. It felt like a natural fit.”
One of the most distinctive parts of Ben’s experience at Calvin has been how faith is woven into learning. “The biblical lens woven throughout Calvin’s coursework provides a unique perspective on the educational landscape—one I haven’t encountered in programs at other universities.”
That integration shows up in course projects in meaningful ways. “In my Introduction to Educational Leadership class, I analyzed the leadership approach of a prominent biblical figure. It was fascinating to see how leadership and educational principles from that time can still be applied in schools today.”
Looking ahead, Ben shared, “I hope to help lead a school building someday. I want to be in a role where I can positively impact students’ overall school experience.” ❤️💛
