The COVID-19 virus has caused the world to have to a "new normal." We are all adjusting in ways we would not have imagined a month ago. All of my studio teaching is now totally on line until further notice and our recital date has been cancelled. I have found that teaching online most certainly is not the same as lessons in the studio, but progress is being made and it is a joy to keep my students practicing and growing in spite of this pandemic.

Lessons will continue now until May 21st and resume this coming Fall; that date will be posted later.

GRAAYC at a Glance

GRAAYC is open to all boys and girls from 3rd through 8th grade, including and beyond African American students. It is a diverse chorus whose theme is the heritage of African American music.

"Change Lives Through The Arts"

Our Purpose Grand Rapids African American Youth Chorus' primary purpose is to bring cultural awareness of the rich and diverse legacy, historic significance, and musical contributions of African American composers, arrangers, and performers. It will also provide youth an opportunity to discover individual talents through collective efforts.

Our Founding

The Grand Rapids African American Youth Chorus (GRAAYC) was founded in March 2011 by Kaye Davis, a retired public school music teacher. Her husband Duane Davis, a well know vocal jazz and choral director serves as music advisor and assitant director. Their two sons, Xavier and Quincy Davis, are professional jazz musicans, music educators, and recording artists. Their daughter Ericas is an elementary school administrator in NY Public schools. They truly believe that music makes a tremendous impact on the lives of youth and that it is instrumental in providing a pwerful tool in the educational growth of the youth in society.

Our Vision

The vision of the Grand Rapids African American Youth Chorus is to encourage the appreciation and understanding of music and the arts by expanding cultural awareness of the contributions of African American music in American music history and learning of its historical significance.
