Flagstick in or out? Lots of strong feelings about this one among the golfers out there since the 2019 changes to the rules of golf, but has gotten to the bottom of it - from a scientific analysis, if your goal is to make more putts, TAKE THE FLAGSTICK OUT! I know, I know, there are a handful of Tour players out there who leave it in, but the vast majority putt with the flagstick out.
Check out the link in my bio to this fantastic article!
The "pace of play" argument (which holds that it's faster to just leave the flagstick in than to remove it and put it back) is addressing a separate goal (pace of play v. making more putts), but there shouldn't be any time impact on removing or not removing the flagstick. For a foursome playing golf, the flag only needs to be removed once by the player who is closest to the hole and then replaced by the player who putts out first. For those fortunate enough to play with caddies, it's even less of an issue.
Make more putts!!!
