A Q&A with French president Emmanuel Macron about the role of artificial intelligence in France and the rest of the world:

In an interview with WIRED, French President Emmanuel Macron describes his plans to enhance the country's AI efforts—and differentiate them from those in the US.

"The rise of ETFs highlights the increasing role of technology in markets. ETFs are traded in fractions of a second, which means that every company with listed shares or bonds can also be traded in fractions of a second, as quickly as a computer program can process the data. Those programs, and the algorithms that drive them, are beginning to upend and distort the multi-trillion-dollar business of buying and selling stocks and bonds."

A testament to the importance, but also some of the dangers, of our ever-increasing dependence on technology.

The rise of exchange-traded funds and algorithm-driven trading likely contributed to February's wild stock swings.

“The biggest obstacle that I’ve had to overcome is probably fear and embracing the unknown. It’s being able to dedicate myself to something that I’m not always sure of. I think the best thing to do is put myself in uncomfortable situations. I embrace those situations because I know I can learn from those situations even though I don’t know how it’s gonna end. As a matter of fact, I actively pursue those opportunities.”

“I became an Economics major sophomore year and my academic path has been quite straight forward. My path has been slowly shaped by many wise mentors to make sure I maximize my learning potential despite the apparent challenge. I have since tried to make class selections that challenge me rather than depreciate my skills and waste my time and money. With that said, it’s very simple fall into the trap that my time at Calvin is entirely for me. But that is not the case. I only stand here today because God gave me a unique set of gifts and the opportunity to use them. Also, my parents and other generous individuals have supported me financially, mentally, and relationally. When seen in this light, my time at Calvin is really the resources of others invested in me for the sake of my future self and family. I cannot think of a better motivator for me to work hard than simply because it’s the moral thing to do and it’s my way of expressing gratitude to God, my family, and many others who have helped me in my undergraduate years.”

“There is only so much creative production that can be demanded from a finite number of people. In the end, companies will find that the vast majority of innovation taking place in their industry is occurring outside of their own four walls.”

Capturing innovation from "the crowd" (as in crowdsourcing) is now streamlined enough to become a part of any company's survival kit.

“Just meditating on the Word of God about what He wants me to do for Him drives me forward to do my best... he helps me understand to lean not unto my own understanding but to lean into Him. Right now, I am a business major concentrating in Marketing. I started out wanting to concentrate in Finance because it’s an easy way of getting a job and becomes it comes easy to me. However, Calvin has taught me to think of money as a means to an end and to do what I am passionate about. I concentrate in marketing because using my creative side and interacting with different people is something I value. My long-term goal is to go back to Indonesia and do Business as Missions (BAM) by creating my own business that reflects a culture which based on Biblical principles.”
