Jocelyn Benson Names Senator from West Michigan to be Next Lt. Governor
Grand Rapids, August 19, 2026 – By Bob Smith
Candidate for Governor Jocelyn Benson addressed supporters and the press on Wednesday at Vivant Brewery to announce her choice for Michigan’s next Lt. Governor: Senator Winnie Brinks (D, 29th). Congresswoman Hillary Scholten (D, 3rd) kicked off the event by introducing the current Secretary of State to the invitation-only crowd. Benson made her case for the appointment before bringing the Senate Majority Leader out to greet the attendees to roaring applause.
Winnie Brinks brings legislative experience that the Benson campaign had been lacking. She has served in Michigan’s Legislature for 14 years and is the state’s first woman to serve as Senate Majority Leader. During her service as SML she has overseen the repeal of Right to Work in the private sector, the restoration of Prevailing Wage for government contracts, and many more measures to support Labor and all working people in Michigan.
The West Michigan CAP has endorsed Brinks in each of her campaigns for the House and the Senate, and the UAW supports her being added to the Benson ticket for Governor/Lt. Governor.
The official nomination for Lt. Governor candidate will take place at the Michigan Democratic Party (MDP) Nominating Convention on August 29th at the Lansing Center.
