Join Us for a Local Food Demo at the Market this Saturday!

Head over to the Grand Rapids Farmers' Market this Saturday, September 12th at 10:00 AM for a cooking demonstration led by Jodi Nordlund! She’ll be making Classic Bruschetta with toasted sourdough and topped with tangy and sweet tomatoes, garlic and basil.

Take Home Recipe Kit: The first 20 people in attendance will receive a free recipe kit to recreate this tasty dish at home!

Another 500 pounds of fruit and vegetables from the NCROC horticulture gardens were donated to Second Harvest with help from the Itasca County Master Gardeners. Many of the vegetable plants were donated by Beier's Greenhouse & Nursery in Grand Rapids.

One Hour. One thousand Pounds!

Staff members at North Central Research and Outreach Center (NCROC) took a hour out of their regular duties on Wednesday and picked 1,000 pounds of apples. They bagged the apples, loaded them into a truck, and delivered them to Second Harvest Food Bank in Grand Rapids. This load is one of several donations already made and will be donated this fall.

NCROC has provided annual donations of apples, blueberries, and various vegetables to Second Harvest for many years.

Position Opening: Temporary Farm Equipment Operator
The Temporary Farm Equipment Operator provides seasonal support for NCROC's agricultural and cropping operations. The position operates farm equipment and assists with field activities including tilling, planting, harvesting, grain handling, transportation, mowing, and other seasonal farm operations as assigned.

The employee is responsible for safely operating agricultural equipment, performing routine equipment checks and basic maintenance, and working cooperatively with NCROC staff to complete assigned work safely and efficiently.

Work is primarily performed outdoors in agricultural fields and farm environments. The position may involve exposure to varying weather conditions, dust, pollen, noise, uneven terrain, and other normal farm operating conditions.

Work schedules may vary based on weather, crop conditions, equipment availability, and seasonal operational needs. During planting and harvest, extended hours may be necessary to complete time-sensitive field operations.

From the Itasca County Master Gardeners.

"We're excited to share a project we've been working on this year, with Beier's and NCROC!
In July, we spent several hot days planting over 200 plants in high tunnels. These plants include squash, cucumber, and tomatoes. The harvest will go to Itasca community food shelves."

Emily Sonder gave a presentation about bird banding during the Bell Museum's Eco Explorations camp at NCROC. She also led the campers on a "birding" walk around NCROC property where the campers used binoculars to find different species of birds. The highlight was a red tailed hawk.

Emily is currently studying at Minnesota North College in Grand Rapids, where she is an active member of the Natural Resources Club, and has volunteered with the MN DNR on local goose banding projects. In 2023, she was a member of the Grand Rapids FFA Fish & Wildlife Team, which won the Minnesota State competition and advanced to the national level. She will continue her education at Bemidji State University, with the goal of pursuing a career in wildlife management and conservation.

Gaea Crozier, a Nongame Wildlife Specialist with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) paid a visit to the Bell Museum's Eco Exploration camp at NCROC. She has worked in this position for over 20 years and focuses on conserving rare species found in Northeastern Minnesota. Gaea gave a presentation to Bell campers on what a Wildlife Biologist does as well as how animals fit into their specific ecosystems. In addition to the presentation, campers learned how to determine the age, gender, and species of a turtle based on its shell.

This was the final camp of 2026 at NCROC.

NCROC took part in the 45th Annual Tall Timber Days parade held Sunday in Grand Rapids. Participating staff and family members handed out candy, slime and a variety of promotional items along the route.

The annual Tall Timber Days event was established as a tribute to the community's rich lumberjack past. The 3-day weekend celebration has something for everyone; complete with log rolling races, chainsaw art demonstrations, art and craft fairs, live music, and more.
