After graduating from Wayland High School in 2007 Ryan Kaminski found himself in Uganda teaching at several different schools over the summer. That first semester at Grand Valley State University he couldn't stop thinking about Uganda! Several trips back and forth, the purchase of land, accumulating ministry partners, financial resources and construction of several buildings the doors to Rising St

Every seat is full.
Look closely and you'll see it: dozens of little ones packed onto wooden benches, coloring pages spread across every inch of desk space, a teacher keeping watch from the back. This is the nursery section at Rising Star, and it is bursting at the seams.
That's the beautiful, difficult reality of this school. Word has spread. Families walk for miles to enroll their children here, because they know that what happens in this room changes everything. And so the room keeps filling up.
More students means more need — more teachers, more desks, more meals, more space. The demand is a sign of trust. Meeting it is the challenge.
You can help. $35/month sponsors one child's full education at Rising Star — tuition, a uniform, supplies, and a daily meal. One more seat, fully funded.

P7. The top of the mountain. 🎉
These are Rising Star's oldest primary students — the ones about to sit their national leaving exams and step into secondary school. They've been here through it all: the early letters, the long walks, the crowded classrooms, the daily meals, the years of showing up.
And look at them now. Arms up. Grinning. Ready.
This is what the finish line of primary school looks like. And it's only the beginning of what's next.

Give a room full of kids paper and crayons, and watch what happens.
Some hunch over their work, tongues out in concentration. Some glance up to see what their neighbor is making. One kid wanders over to check on a friend's drawing. A few just sit and think about what to create next.
It looks like chaos. It's actually something beautiful: a roomful of young minds, free to imagine, supported by a school that believes creativity matters just as much as arithmetic.
This is an ordinary day at Rising Star. And ordinary days like this are exactly what childhood should be made of.

Look closely at her collar. It says "Rising Star Junior School."
She's wearing the name. And right now, she's living up to it — head down, crayon in hand, completely absorbed in the work of creating something. The kind of focus most adults wish they could find.
This is what belonging looks like. A uniform that says you're part of something. A desk that's yours. A teacher who knows your name. A future being colored in, one careful stroke at a time.
She is a rising star. Literally. And the world hasn't seen what she'll become yet.

Hands reaching. A staff member serving. A small connection moment that's bigger than it looks.
This is daily life around Rising Star — a community where food is shared, where a woman cares deeply for the students that attend this amazing school.
When you sponsor a child at Rising Star, you're not just helping one student. You're strengthening an entire community — because an educated child grows into an adult who lifts up everyone around them. That ripple effect is real, and it's measurable.
$35/month. One child. One community made stronger.

Snack break, the Rising Star way: kneeling on a concrete ledge, orange cups in hand, backpacks at your side, watching the world go by. ☕
Simple. Steady. Together.

From up here, you can see the whole thing!
Blue roofs scattered across a green hilltop. Classroom blocks and nursery buildings and staff housing, all surrounded by farmland that rolls out toward distant hills. This is Rising Star — not a single building, but a growing campus carved into the Ugandan highlands.
Every roof you see started as an empty patch of grass. Every structure represents a season of giving, a stretch of construction, a community choosing to invest in the next generation.
What started small keeps getting bigger. And from this view, you can finally see just how far it's come.

Read what's written on the chalkboard behind her: "My school is Rising Star Junior School. I am in Baby Class. I learn the vowels."
This is where it all begins. Baby Class. The vowels. Counting to twenty. A teacher clapping along, celebrating every small victory like it's the most important thing in the world — because to these kids, it is.
The youngest learners need the most encouragement and the least judgment. They need someone to clap when they get it right and clap again when they try. That's what early education at Rising Star looks like: joyful, patient, and full of belief.
You can help make sure the clapping never stops. $35/month sponsors a child's full education — starting right here, in Baby Class, with the vowels.

When your friend says something so funny you have to hold your head on. 😂
The uniforms match. The laughter's contagious. The day is good.
