🏐 : Central Christian Girls Volleyball! (edit: 1970)

We’re heading back to the early days of girls volleyball at Central Christian High School, when the yearbook noted that athletics for girls were “slowly becoming more popular” and volleyball was one of the school’s fast-growing sports.

In just their second year of league competition, the Central Christian girls finished with a 3-4 record while competing against seven other Christian schools. But the yearbook made it clear that the record didn’t tell the whole story — many of their matches were decided by only a few points!

Seniors Mary Willemstyn, Esther Rypma, and Sharon Vander Boon were recognized as excellent players, while Debbie Rodenhouse, Pat Folkertsma, Helen Hoekema, and Jan Koll were commended for their valuable contributions to the team.

What a great glimpse into the growth of girls athletics at our schools! 💙🖤

Track and Field State Champions!

In community time we celebrated our state champion track athletes.

👟Girls 4 x 100m State Champions
In their relay order, Nenfot Darshak, Nenrit Darshak, Taylor Frost, and Daelyn Jones.
💙 Set new school record of 48.91 at the Conference Meet
💙 Won the State title in one of the most thrilling races of their season with a time of 49.43 seconds!

Boys 4 x 800m State Champions
In their relay order: Ben Romero, Sean Ryan, Ashton Fink, and Micah Small
💙 Set school record of 7:53.05 at Conference Meet.
💙 Won the State title with a blistering time of 7:49.57, breaking their own record!

Adaptive Shot Put Champion
Ezra Ippel: Winning a state championship as a freshman is an incredible accomplishment, but the most exciting part is knowing that this is only the beginning of what he can achieve.

The track and field coaches would like to thank each of these athletes for the tremendous amount of hard work, dedication, and commitment they put in, not only during the season, but throughout the offseason as well. Their leadership, determination, and willingness to push each other everyday at practice made this season truly special.

Eagles, thank you for representing Grand Rapids Christian with pride and excellence. We are incredibly proud of you and all that you accomplished!

We’re heading back to 1975 and a season of continued growth for the Grand Rapids Christian boys soccer team! 💙🖤

Under first-year coach Dave Pott, the Eagles finished 5-5, earning third place in the 6-C League. After losing several key players to graduation, a young team stepped up and continued to improve throughout the season.

The Eagles scored 19 goals, including an impressive 11 goals over their final three games. Junior Mark Recker led the attack with 11 goals, breaking his own school record of seven from the previous season, while senior Dirk Zwiep added five.

On defense, seniors Bob Kroondyk and Mike Lambers, sophomore Dave Duyst, juniors Tim Berends and Mike Phillips, and goalkeeper Bob Broene helped provide what the yearbook described as “cohesive teamwork.”

Coach Pott highlighted the team’s ability to score quickly and its balance at every position—and the yearbook predicted even greater improvement ahead. A fun look back at another chapter in the history of Eagle soccer!
