šŸ“š ALPHA BOOK OF THE WEEK-

A Mindful Journey: An Adventure of Discovery & Transformation

by Coach VJ | Mental Performance Coach & Speaker

What happens when a 22-year-old professional basketball player leaves everything familiar behind and moves 6,000 miles away to Greece?

That’s where Vera Jo Bustos’ A Mindful Journey begins.

Bustos takes us inside her experience playing professional basketball overseas—giving us a firsthand look at Greece, its culture, and the challenges of trying to find your way in a completely unfamiliar environment.

But this isn’t simply a book about basketball.

It’s about what happens inside the athlete when things don’t go according to plan.

Bustos writes honestly about:

šŸ€ Playing professional basketball in Greece

šŸŒ Adapting to a new culture and learning a new language

🧠 Self-doubt and the mental challenges of competition

šŸ  Homesickness and loneliness

šŸ’Ŗ Dealing with constant defeat

šŸ¤ The power of connection with others

šŸ”Ž Discovering who you are—and who you are becoming

One of the most powerful themes in the book is Bustos’ realization that defeat isn’t a dead end.

Sometimes, it’s a detour.

Throughout the story, she weaves in the mental skills, training, wisdom and lessons she used to navigate her experience—not just as an athlete, but as a person.

And that’s what makes A Mindful Journey such a great Alpha book.

Because at Alpha, we don’t believe performance is only about what you can do physically.

The athlete is the person.

How you respond to adversity.
How you handle failure.
How you talk to yourself.
How you learn.
How you grow.

Those things matter just as much as the next rep, sprint or jump.

A Mindful Journey is a reminder that sometimes the greatest transformation happens when you find yourself far outside your comfort zone.

šŸ“– Read the book. Take the journey.

Win the Inside Game.

ALPHA MINDSET :

We are Alpha HUMAN Performance.

Not Alpha Sports Performance.
Not Alpha Fitness & Performance.
Not Alpha Training & Performance.

Alpha Human Performance.

And here’s the difference:

We don’t just train athletes.

We develop humans.

Because performance isn’t only about how fast you run, how high you jump, or how much you lift.

It’s about the person underneath the jersey.

Mindset.
Training.
Performance.
Recovery.

Four pillars. One purpose:

Build better humans who are capable of performing at their best.

We believe the strongest athletes are built from the inside out.

Confidence.
Discipline.
Accountability.
Resilience.
Work ethic.
Leadership.

Those qualities don’t stop when the game ends.

They become part of who you are.

That’s why we chose the name Alpha Human Performance.

Because our goal has never been to simply create better athletes.

Our goal is to develop people who perform at a high level—in sport, in school, in their careers, and in life.

šŸ€ ALPHA TOOL + MOVES OF THE WEEK

THE GOAL: TRAIN WHAT SHOWS UP IN THE GAME.

This week, we’re combining strength, explosiveness, speed, and technology with basketball player Braden.

šŸ› ļø ALPHA TOOL OF THE WEEK

OVR Performance Technology

The OVR Jump Tracker and OVR Laser Timer allow us to measure the performance—not just perform the exercise.

Can Braydon nemmers maintain his numbers as fatigue builds?

Because in basketball, we need explosive athletes who can still jump, accelerate, and change the game late.

šŸ’„MOVES OF THE WEEK

1ļøāƒ£ Zercher Squat
āž”ļø Lower-body strength
āž”ļø Force production

šŸ€ Basketball transfer: Better ability to absorb and create force through contact, finish at the rim, and elevate.

2ļøāƒ£ Single-Leg Hip Thrust Hold
āž”ļø Hip strength + single-leg stability

šŸ€ Basketball transfer: Stronger positioning and control when planting, cutting, jumping, and landing.

āž”ļø VERTICAL JUMP — OVR TRACKED

šŸ€ Rebounding • Rim finishing • Playing above the rim

3ļøāƒ£ DB Z Press + KB Gorilla Row
āž”ļø Core + upper-body strength and stability

šŸ€ Basketball transfer: Better body control through contact, stronger posture, and the ability to stay balanced while moving.

āž”ļø SPRINT — OVR LASER TIMED
šŸ€ First step • Transition • Separation • Closeouts

The numbers tell us the story.

Can Braydon nemmers produce the same quality of movement set after set?

Because the goal isn’t just to be explosive when you’re fresh.

The goal is to stay explosive when the game gets hard.

Train the movement. Measure the performance. Transfer it to the court.

šŸ“š ALPHA BOOK OF THE WEEK

ā€œLetters to a Young Athleteā€ — Chris Bosh

Being an athlete is about so much more than what happens between the lines.

In Letters to a Young Athlete, NBA champion Chris Bosh shares lessons on the mindset, discipline, adversity, and personal growth required to build a meaningful athletic career—and an even more meaningful life.

At Alpha, we believe the goal isn’t simply to build better athletes.

It’s to build better people through sport.

šŸ’„ ALPHA TAKEAWAYS:
• Your identity is bigger than your sport.
• Success is built through the daily process.
• Adversity is part of the journey—not the end of it.
• Stay curious. Stay coachable. Keep growing.
• What you become along the way matters more than what you accomplish.

Train your body. Build your mindset. Own your journey.

šŸ”„ ALPHA TOOL OF THE WEEK: VERTIMAX

Pause Jumps — Take the Arms Out. Turn the Legs Up.

The VertiMax is more than just a jump-training tool—it can change how an athlete produces power.

For this variation, athletes use the handles attached to the bungee cords instead of the traditional waist harness.

Why?

🚫 No arm swing.
āøļø Pause. Reset.
šŸ’„ Then EXPLODE.

Taking the arms out forces athletes to generate more power directly through the hips, knees and ankles, making the jump even more explosive.

It’s a simple variation with a big training effect:

Pause → Load → Explode → Land → Reset

At Alpha, we’re always looking for ways to challenge athletes to produce more power—not just jump higher.

Train with intent. Move with purpose. EXPLODE.

šŸ”„ ALPHA MOVE OF THE WEEK

Safety Squat Bar Reverse Lunge

This week, we’re putting the Safety Squat Bar Reverse Lunge in the spotlight.

It’s more than a strength exercise—it’s an athletic movement that challenges the body to produce force, control position, and stabilize through a single-leg pattern.

šŸ’„Why we love it:
• Builds single-leg strength and stability
• Develops glute and quad strength
• Challenges core stability under load
• Improves balance and body control
• Trains the ability to decelerate and produce force
• Carries over to sprinting, cutting, jumping and change of direction

The reverse lunge also allows athletes to train strength one leg at a time, helping expose and improve movement imbalances while building confidence under load.

At Alpha, we don’t just lift weights.

We train movements that transfer to sport.

Alpha Mindset:

YOUR TEAM TRAINING IS THE FOUNDATION.
YOUR EXTRA WORK IS THE EDGE.

Train with your team.
Compete with your teammates.
Build the culture.

But if you want to separate yourself, you have to invest in yourself beyond the team environment.

Different environment.
Different stimulus.
Different challenges.
More intentional development.

The goal isn’t to replace what you do at school.

It’s to build on it.

Because the best athletes don’t ask,
ā€œWhat do I have to do?ā€

They ask:

ā€œWhat more can I do?ā€

That’s the Alpha Mindset.

SHOW UP. WORK. SEPARATE.

WE DON’T HAVE AN ATHLETE OF THE WEEK AWARD.

And we’re okay with that.

It’s absolutely worth celebrating an athlete’s achievements—PRs, championships, college commitments, big performances, and breakthroughs.

But at Alpha, we believe there’s something bigger to celebrate:

THE ATHLETE’S STORY.

Every athlete who walks through our doors brings a different story.

Different goals.
Different challenges.
Different motivation.
Different starting points.

And no two journeys look the same.

So rather than ranking one athlete above another, we celebrate the process each athlete is committed to mastering:

• The mindset when things get hard
• The preparation when no one is watching
• The discipline to keep showing up
• The work put in when progress feels slow
• The confidence built through training
• The performance that eventually follows

From Xavier Tillman Sr. competing at the highest level…

To Mallory Wandel chasing her Division I dream…

To Irelynn Bitson building her foundation as a young phenom…

Each journey is different.
Each story matters.

Our job at Alpha isn’t simply to help athletes achieve an outcome.

It’s to help them master the process that makes the outcome possible.

To help shape their story through mindset, training, performance and recovery.

With grace in how they carry themselves.
With power in how they compete.

Because at Alpha, we’re not just building athletes.

We’re helping build the story they’ll carry with them long after they leave our doors.
