Whenever I’m talking with people who are interested in our classes, I get asked the same question all the time: What does your program look like, and what will I actually learn?
When it comes to learning a martial art, a lot of people assume they’ll be fighting right away. If you look up Muay Thai training online, you’ll see plenty of videos of people sparring, getting dropped, and going to war in the gym. It’s easy to think that’s what Muay Thai is all about.
The truth is, if you’re a beginner, you’ll spend most of your time in our Skills Classes. These classes are designed to teach Muay Thai in a progressive, structured way through pad work, bag work, and technical drills. We also have separate sparring classes, but at our gym we focus heavily on technical, light-contact sparring. Hard sparring is reserved for those who are preparing for fights and are ready for that level of training.
Our Skills Classes (which also serve as great conditioning workouts) start with jump rope, followed by six rounds of pad work and detailed instruction. You’ll get an excellent workout while developing real Muay Thai skills at the same time.

How does a person get better at head movement in Muay Thai? I think in general Muaythai gets a bad rep for not having any head movement just like how you may hear some coaches say that boxing is bad for Muay Thai because of the habits of bobbing and weaving. Well, both are true In some cases. I think it’s also really dependent upon the person executing it. Anything in theory can work if it’s applied under the right context. People used to make fun of karate guys and taekwondo guys who would step in the ring and get their butts kicked which to be fair that happened a lot but those guys that actually applied taekwondo or karate under the context of combat sports and pressure tested their techniques made people behind the curve if they didn’t learn those techniques at the very least so they know how to defend them.
If you really want to get good head movement, go with a training partner you trust and ask them to throw a lot of punches at your head slowly and then work your way up to full speed. This allows room to develop your skills and save your brain cells. Trying to learn how to move when your partner is going really fast is only going to have you overreact and then run into other punches making the damage twice as hard. I’m saying this from experience lol

How do you improve your cardio for Muay Thai?
At Grand Prairie Muay Thai, we don’t do roadwork, which is going to come as a shock to a lot of people. But hear me out.
First of all, roadwork does have its benefits. It does increase endurance and helps you push mentally, similar to how you would have to push in a fight. Hitting the pads all the time or doing bag work is going to wear down your joints, so you need to do something that will help you increase your endurance while, at the same time, not wearing your body out excessively.
However, there’s a principle in exercise science called the SAID principle: Specific Adaptation to Imposed Demand. In other words, if you want to increase your cardio capacity for a specific sport, you have to do things that are closely related to that activity. If you’ve done boxing, for example, and then transitioned to BJJ, you know very well that the cardio you have in boxing is not nearly the same as a grappler’s type of cardio.
So what do you do?
Aside from doing bag work or pad work to increase your cardio, shadowboxing at a high intensity with intervals of fast-paced striking will not only tax your system and improve your cardio, but also give your body the movements necessary for Muay Thai.
If you’re looking for a routine to do, just shoot me a DM and I’ll walk you through what we do at our gym and what some of our competitors do outside of the gym.
