I have been terribly remiss in updating this page! Since the last update, the 8th Grade Band performed at a special Veterans Day assembly at RMS. Also, six 8th Graders participated in the Western Slope Select Band on November 18 and 19 - Alani on flute, Wade on trumpet, Kaylee on French horn, Lincoln on tuba, and Jacob and Henry on percussion. Finally, Henry successfully auditioned on jazz piano for the Western Slope Honor Jazz Band, which will take place the third weekend in January.

All RMS Bands will have their winter concert on the evening of Wednesday, December 14. More details to come as we get closer!

Our first concerts are coming up soon! I want to make sure everyone is clear on the concert black uniform students wear for performance.

What is stated in the Band Handbook - "The concert uniform for all students is a black dress shirt and full-length black dress pants as well as black socks and the nicest, darkest shoes the student owns. Skirts, yoga pants, capris, leggings, athletic pants, and tank tops/shirts with no sleeves are not appropriate."

The Kamstra translation - I want the students to dress for success and look appropriately dressed up because it makes them uniform, professional, and reinforces the concert as a special event. Athletic pants/athletic leggings aren't considered dressy, but "jet black jeans" without holes are great. I say no skirts because of past experiences of skirts being too short, even with specific guidance on length, as well as certain instruments being difficult to hold properly while wearing a skirt. Any plain black dress shirt long or short sleeve is fine. The "nicest, darkest shoes they own'' translates to this - if kids own black or dark dress shoes I'd like for them to wear those but please don't feel obligated to go buy dress shoes that they will outgrow in 3.2 seconds.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns!

Today is my first day back in the building and I’m very excited for the upcoming year! I do want to celebrate two honors from last school year.

First, the long-awaited plaques arrived celebrating the 7th Grade Band and 8th Grade Band performances last year at the Colorado West Music Festival.

Second, the entire RMS Band program received the “Exemplary Band Award” given by the Colorado Bandmasters Association.

Congrats to all the students involved - I’m so proud of you all and this is an indication of your work ethic and dedication!!

Parents of 5th Graders coming to RMS next year - Instrument Try It Night is BACK!

WHO?
Your 5th Grade student (along with their parent/s) who is interested in playing an instrument in the RMS Band or Orchestra next year.

WHAT?
"Try It Night" is a time dedicated to letting 5th Grade students try all instruments available to play at the beginning of 6th Grade at RMS. We will have experts on every instrument to help your student find one that they love and is an excellent fit.

WHEN?
Tuesday, May 3 from 5 to 7pm. This is an open house format so come during whatever time-frame will work best for you in that two hour block. Plan on spending about 20-30 minutes so your student has the opportunity to try every instrument once.

WHERE?
In the RMS Gymnasium.

WHY?
To allow all students to hold and play both Band and Orchestra instruments so they are able to make an informed first, second, and third instrument choice. We would love every student interested in playing an instrument to attend, as this is the best way and time to fit students with instruments.

Please help me to congratulate the 7th Grade Band and the 8th Grade Band receiving Superior ratings at the Colorado West Music Festival this week. The students worked so diligently for many weeks to prepare for the Festival without really knowing what they were getting themselves ready for, as we haven't had the Festival since 2019. Not only did they perform beautifully, but also got many compliments on their demeanor, behavior, and happiness which to me is much more significant than the rating. I couldn't be more proud and sincerely hope all students enjoyed the process and the final result.

I also want to celebrate the RMS combined 7th/8th Grade Orchestra and 7th/8th combined Choir and the incredible Mrs. Roth for earning Superior ratings at the Festival. It was a proud and glorious day for the entire RMS music program.

After no posts in two months…here’s two in one day. I’m nothing if not consistent 😉

On Saturday night, I attended an event at Warehouse 2565 that featured, among other acts, a local indie band called The Lip that included two former RMS Band students - CMU freshman Wayne Aggen on drums and Palisade High School senior Henry Shrader on bass. It makes my heart happy when I see former students continuing to love and pursue music. ❤️
