GDL – Graduated Drivers License Requirements

Step #1 – Complete 30 Hour Driver Education Class
Complete classroom hours
Complete Class Test
Complete DMV written permit test – eligible @ 14 years 11 months

Step #2 - Receive Permit from DMV – eligible @ 15 years – Appt required
Proof of class and test – Birth certificate – Social security card - 2 Proof of address required

Step #3 – 50 Hour drive log / Driving instruction with parent
50 hour drive log – on paper or Drive Ready app for smart phone
Student must log 50 hours drive time during permit year (40 day 10 night)
Student MUST have adult over 21 w/ valid license in car with them
All learning / driving hours count toward drive log

Step #4 – 6 Hours driving with an instructor (required if getting license before age 16 years 6 mos)
This program is 3 – 2 hour drives. Begin about half way through permit year
Student must be comfortable driving the car
If learn to drive time is required before 6 hour program, call for appointments

Step #5 – Complete Drive Test
The drive test can be completed with us or any 3rd party tester – DMV not doing testing at this time
Eligible for drive test after holding permit for one full year after permit issue date

Please take a moment to review these important rules when it comes to stopping for school buses:

✅ Two-Lane Road
When a school bus stops, all vehicles traveling in both directions MUST stop.

✅ Multi-Lane Paved Road (no divider)
When a school bus stops, all vehicles traveling in both directions MUST stop.

✅ Divided Highway (with an unpaved space of at least 5 feet, a raised median, or a physical barrier).

-Vehicles behind the bus MUST stop.

-Vehicles traveling in the opposite direction may proceed with CAUTION.

1st Skills Driving & Riding school is seeking a Behind The Wheel driving instructor. This
position will be for appointments primarily in Grand Junction and at times Delta.
Candidate should be available for weekend appointments. A preferred candidate would
be retired first responder, former instructor/teacher, dispatcher or related fields.
Currently employed welcome to apply but can present scheduling difficulties. Working
schedule is considered part time, however, could be close to full time based on
availability and desire to work. Position is somewhat flexible and very understanding of
other engagements. Job training is supplied from other instructors.
Job Description:
Instruct teenage drivers to meet Colorado License Requirements
Each appointment is 2 hours towards student’s 6 hour requirement
Training is structured with existing routes and topics covered
Instructor is in passenger side of company vehicle with safety equipment
Compensation
$15.00 per hour training period, typically under 90 days
$18.00 per hour once proficient
