Unlike other vaccine-preventable diseases, 𝙏𝙀𝙏𝘼𝙉𝙐𝙎 is caused by bacterial spores through broken skin and is not spread from person to person.

Tetanus is caused by the bacterium 𝙘𝙡𝙤𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙙𝙞𝙪𝙢 𝙩𝙚𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙞, which is commonly found in soil, dust, and manure. The bacteria produce a toxin called 𝙩𝙚𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙤𝙨𝙥𝙖𝙨𝙢𝙞𝙣, which affects the nervous system, leading to symptoms such as muscle stiffness and spasms.

Tetanus bacteria can enter the body through cuts, puncture wounds, or other injuries where the skin is broken.

In severe cases, tetanus can lead to complications such as difficulty breathing, fractures or dislocations from muscle spasms, and even death if left untreated.

The ultimate goal of World Immunization Week is for more people – and their communities – to be protected from vaccine-preventable diseases.

Who should get the shingles vaccine? The vaccine is particularly important for individuals who are at higher risk of developing shingles or its complications, including:

⟡ 𝗔𝗱𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝟱𝟬 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿: This is the age group where the risk of shingles increases significantly.

⟡ 𝗔𝗱𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗹𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲𝘀: Even if you've had shingles before, getting vaccinated can help reduce the risk of recurrence.

⟡ 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀: This includes people with conditions such as HIV/AIDS or cancer, or those undergoing immunosuppressive treatments like chemotherapy or long-term corticosteroid therapy.
