Stay protected, stay informed! ๐๐ช Preventing tetanus is as easy as keeping up with your vaccines and practicing proper wound care. Remember: clean cuts, timely boosters, and you're good to go!
04/25/2024
Unlike other vaccine-preventable diseases, ๐๐๐๐ผ๐๐๐ is caused by bacterial spores through broken skin and is not spread from person to person.
Tetanus is caused by the bacterium ๐๐ก๐ค๐จ๐ฉ๐ง๐๐๐๐ช๐ข ๐ฉ๐๐ฉ๐๐ฃ๐, which is commonly found in soil, dust, and manure. The bacteria produce a toxin called ๐ฉ๐๐ฉ๐๐ฃ๐ค๐จ๐ฅ๐๐จ๐ข๐๐ฃ, which affects the nervous system, leading to symptoms such as muscle stiffness and spasms.
Tetanus bacteria can enter the body through cuts, puncture wounds, or other injuries where the skin is broken.
In severe cases, tetanus can lead to complications such as difficulty breathing, fractures or dislocations from muscle spasms, and even death if left untreated.

The global vaccine drives of the second half of the 20th century are one of humanity's greatest achievements. Immunization campaigns have enabled us to eradicate smallpox, nearly defeat polio, and ensure more children survive and thrive than ever before.
The ultimate goal of World Immunization Week is for more people โ and their communities โ to be protected from vaccine-preventable diseases.

Who should get the shingles vaccine? The vaccine is particularly important for individuals who are at higher risk of developing shingles or its complications, including:
โก ๐๐ฑ๐๐น๐๐ ๐ฎ๐ด๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ฑ๐ฌ ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ผ๐น๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ฟ: This is the age group where the risk of shingles increases significantly.

This includes people with conditions such as HIV/AIDS or cancer, or those undergoing immunosuppressive treatments like chemotherapy or long-term corticosteroid therapy.
Additionally, studies have shown that the chickenpox vaccine can also reduce the risk of developing shingles in vaccinated individuals. Make an appointment with UND Student Health Services!
